I came across this medallion marked "Canberra May 1927" with the wording around the rim "A notable page in the history of Australia"
Pictures attached.
Can anyone throw any light on what it might be, other than associated in some way to the opening of the new parliment in Canberra?
Thanks
I see no other light in the scheme of things
The building was opened on 9 May 1927 by the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother). The opening ceremonies were both splendid and incongruous, given the sparsely built nature of Canberra of the time and its small population. Th

Yes, the opening of the now Old Parliament House and all school children were given the medal as part of the celebration, I think.
I have never seen this before.
thanks for sharing and if you want to get rid of it.

Welcome to the forum Aussie.
Thank you for the welcome.
I am enjoying reading all the post.
It will be a little while before I catch on to some of the 'inside' humour, but I will, eventually.

Mark, whereabouts in Oz are you from, and how long have you been stranded? Do you plan to return 'home'?
curiously the design is almost the same as that on a French coin I have.
I can't find it at the moment but I am sure one of our members would have this coin :ok:

I come from Perth WA.
I came to work in the UK in 1999 for a few years ..... and ... here I still am. Two of my three daughters have returned to Perth and now with 4 grandchildren, the pressure to return is mounting. So yes, some time in the next 5 years I will return, just waiting for (1) Wife to retire, (2) the £STG to improve against the A$ - or the A$ to weaken, just a little :) :beg: (3) Lotto win.

I do not collect medals either, but I came across it in a car-boot sale and as it was only a few penny's picked it up. I saw one on ebay listed as a 'specimen' so I contacted the seller, but he too knew nothing about the medal which sold for £5.60 inc post.
So here I am.

it's probably listed in Carlisle (something like that - I can never get the spelling right)

Welcome to the forum.
I am from Perth. What suburb to you hail from?
If you are thinking of coming back, you better make sure you win the lotto. Perth is now the most expensive place to live in the southern hemisphere. Someone in Perth's southern suburbs won $20M on lotto last night, for a brief moment I thought it might have been me, but alas, I only won $13.

Steve,
Originally from Sorrento in the northern berbs, but sold the family home there a few years ago. I still have a couple of holdings in West Perth and Victoria Park. But the plan is to settle back in Freo or Mandurah. In London you become very accustomed to shops, restaurants and pubs being in walking distance, so hopefully we will be able to achieve that on return.
I have been shocked by the prices, a pint of good ale is A$3.50 at my local, and I understand the it is two or three times that in Perth. One thing I will never understand is that I can buy a good Margaret River red here for about half what you pay in Australia. It cannot be all tax, surely.
Lotto here runs at an average of STG£10 mill, up to STG£100 mill on occasions. Tonight's draw is STG£60 mill. But as they say, lotto is a tax on those that are poor at mathematics.
With the mining boom easing with the slowdown in China things might ease back a bit in Perth over the next few years. I have noticed the housing market getting a little softer. Having property here in London I was not hit by the down turn in the UK economy, so off to a good start if the exchange rate improves (from my perspective). When I arrived I was paying A$2.40 – A$2.80 for a pound, it currently sits at about A$1.62/£1.00. Good if you are visiting the UK but not so good in the other direction.
Time will tell.
Mark
Welcome to the forum Aussie, have a Margaret River red for me.!!

Well thank you, a step forward. At least I know it is not some kid in a school workshop having a lark.
Be interesting to know its providence however.

Thank you.
Got some nice Evan & Tate a few years back. My brother (in Perth) gave me a 'heads up' that they had sold some to the UK before it won multi gold medals, and got them at £6.50 a bottle (purchased 10 dozen). They were beautiful for a 2-3 years and then, even with careful storage, they were still nice but lost their 'zing'. We were forced :) to drink the remainder quickly over the next few months. Tough job but someone had to do it.
