Title: Cleaned $1 Mule coins are popular
Post by: stevo1962 on August 05, 2013, 04:54:48 PM
Seems that 2000 $1 Mule coins are more popular when they are cleaned

Interseting. Not sure I agree with an aUnc grading for this coin, even though he does caveat the auction by saying it's aUnc according to his standards. Just by saying it's aUnc in his standards doesn't obviate the duty he has to apply a more objective view on grading.

He has declared it might have been cleaned, but can't see how this is fetching $610 and counting....

It is a high grade coin (EF/aUNC) is probably right but the fact that it is cleaned should put people off it you would think but apparently not

Satify Your Taste is a member here if I recall ?
Kudos to mentioning it has been cleaned, and IMO the AU53 / AU55 grade is about right.
The wear is minimal, albeit a little battered from a short time in circulation. Nice coin, but mules aren't for me.

Nice coin, but pity it has been cleaned! (NOT possibly!)

Mmmm.... the only evidence I can see of cleaning is a few scratches in the lower left under the tail, and that wouldn't put me off.

However I disagree with the aUNC grading. Its more than a little battered... looks like a mugging victim beaten to death with a cricket bat. ;)

looks like the poor woman has been slashed a bit round the face.  On any other coin, I wouldn't think twice of just spending it.

I wouldn't buy such a coin for that price with an unknown person to me full stop !!!!!

Further, the coin is not well centred.   Be lucky to get the price asked for.

The price asked for?
Bidding started at 99 cents.

imho $600+ is a good price for a nice coin.
Plus seller is offering money back if not satisfied.

Centering is less important than actual grading.
I'd prefer the highest grade vs a perfect center!

I'd go along with that. Besides, you want the set of all three alignments, surely?

EF - CV $3,750
I personally would not pay for such a coin unsighted unseen as I said before

Sorry Sulla, I must disagree.   Central in more important then the grade, not the grade then centralization.

Have you found a Mule or own one?

I've never found a 2000 $1 mule :(
Would love one for collection in the higher grade
I'd prefer to buy from a real dealer not online

Best of luck. Most dealers have never seen one either.

This coin went for $810 .
Quite frankly I would rather spend the same money on a Sydney Mint sovereign , it is possible to get a better grade coin and made out of Gold to boot :ok:

So you would place more value on a perfectly centred "very good" mule as opposed to an UNC coin not perfectly centred?

QuoteHave you found a Mule or own one?

Yes. I have found mules and own a few.

I agree with you Sulla.  And I bet the market does too.  A VF, well centered mule doesn't have a chance of fetching more in auction than an UNC poorly centered mule.

As with a lot of collecting, a VF well centered mule may well achieve a similar amount to an EF poorly centered mule depending on buyer, but agreed with above, grade does seem to attract greater premium.

While the subject coin does have good detail, it has a large amount of nick marks; more than you might typically associated with bag marks. IMHO, aUNC is a bridge too far for the subject coin.

Is there an image of a perfectly centred uncirculated 2000 $1mule for a reference point?

Doubt it. There are only a handful of high grade ones in existence, and I don't think anyone here has one. Remember the variety wasn't discovered for four years.

Fulvio all I asked was is there an image of a perfectly centred uncirculated 2000 $1mule for a reference point?

You replied that you "Doubt it. There are only a handful of high grade ones in existence, and I don't think anyone here has one. Remember the variety wasn't discovered for four years"

I wasn't asking about grades and in all due respect you shouldn't assume anyone here doesn't have one

The coin in the picture I reposted yesterday with the centre strike is uncirculated .I have another in similar condition but it is offcentre and I agree with Fulvio that there wouldn't be too many uncirculated examples around that are perfectly centred. If you had one you'd be very lucky indeed and who knows what it would be worth in the future

Here's another one of my centrered mules which I've called EF+ but it
may grade higher

Yeah thanks Matty .I've had a few other people say that as well
despite it having a few minor issues.I suppose they dont have to
be perfect to be uncirculated

By the way Matt how did they grade yours?  And dont forget to
show us a few photos
