Thought it might make an interesting thread ......
So far I've seen
1984
1994
1998
2000
2008
2009 (not a whole set of ears, more the tip of where a long set would reach if it had them)
2010
1998 is the most common I've seen, followed by 2000 & 2008.
Any others to add to the list?
I have NEVER found one of these in my change, The only one I have is a 1994 coin Enwarb sent me (Cheers Matty :good:)
Pretty sure I've got 1985 and 1995 lying around someplace... but ask Goldy... the Rabbit King! ;)
No worries Jim. 1994 is the most common one ive found so far. Followed by 2006. 2000 is pretty hard from what ive seen.
Goldseeker might know. If he looks for these.
I've also got 1985 and 2006 Bunnies.
I have in my collection......
1984
1994
1998
2000
2006
1985 is the extremely rare Rabbit Ear, just as rare as a good 1921/22overprint Threepence.
I shall add to the list over the weekend once I have checked my collection.
What about the Spew Roos, do need the years of those?
Thanks for all the input on this one.
Looking forward to your additions Goldie, thanks!
(Was thinking of just the ears at this stage to keep it simple).
Firstly thanks to all that said I am the Rabbit Ears king. I further apologise for the late response.
I have found RABBIT EARS from the following years:
1984, 1985 (Extremely Rare), 1994, 1998, 2000, 2008, 2009.
Spew Roos have been found in the following years:
1984, 2006, 2008, 2010.
Combination of Rabbit Ear AND Spew Roos in the following Years:
2006, 2010.
I have others but they involve cuds rather than categories listed above.
If anyone else has others, I'd be interested.
Thanks heaps Goldie for getting that data together.
Yes, I think with the amount of dollar coins you have examined you would definately be the King of Dollar coins, not just rabbit ears.
That 1985 sounds like a very elusive little fella.
Added: I'll have to recheck my 2010's to see if they have spew on them.
In all the years I have been searching $1 coins, I have only found one 1985 Rabbit ear. I purchased the second one several years ago from a forum gent who advertised that he had two in his possession.
After looking at ebay for a long time, I have only ever seen two 1985 Rabbits to date.
Total to date, 5 known to exist. If any forum members have one, I would like to hear about it.
I believe this coin to be rarer than the 2000 Mule $1 coin to which I have found 39 and currently own 26.
What grade are these 85 rabbit ears Goldseeker? Have they been found in mint sets
I dont think ive ever heard of a rabbit ear in any mint set

I have not heard of any report of any Rabbits being found in Mint Sets to date. In saying that, maybe we as collectors are not looking enough.
Look for yourself and determine the grade as I am not a grader of coins, I just collect them. This coin pictured is the one I have at home the other is in the display at the RAM:

Yes,mint sets were struck from specimen dies.
The rabbits ear only appear on business/circulation strikes.
Thanks for the pics Goldie! :good:
I'm really hoping that one of the forum members got this one this afternoon ...... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281144059195 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281144059195)
cheap as chips mate, be good if someone did so we can get some close-ups :good:
Hrm.. why the dancing man? And what are "back biting roos"? Spew roos?
Wonder what it would have gone for with some decent piccies?
Yes, pretty odd wasn't it including the dancing man in a group like that ..... and some decent closeups would have helped heaps.
I don't know about the roo's spewing, but I am for missing it .....
Yep, 'back biting' is the same as 'Spew Roos' and the dancing man has a Cud on the Hat, sometimes referred to as 'sunnies', I have a few of these.

Thank you Nevol ....... that's another one that I had not seen yet.
The 2005 MOR in this lot had not been mentioned in this thread yet either! (That 1985 would have been a nice pickup, after Goldie's info).

:i_agree:
Yet another Dancing Man error to watch out for. :yahoo:
The Dancing Man Hat Cud is not a hard variety to find although the CUD itself can be rather small to very large.
I believe a former forum member, Brissyboy, had a few of these showing various sizes of the cuds.
Because of the previous notification for the Mass Rabbit's for sale, I shall have to keep my eyes open for the 2005 5 MOR Rabbit Ear.
If the sale included the 1985 and 2005 Rabbit ear, then the sale price was a genuine bargain. Had I seen the sale, I would have bid a lot more than what they went for. I purchased a 1985 Rabbit Ear for $100.00 some years ago and two or three days later, found one whilst noodling $1 coins. One of them is on display t the RAM with my Clockface of Upsets.
Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='23813' dateline='1375530728'The Dancing Man Hat Cud is not a hard variety to find
Counting a couple of sacks of UNC ones, I've easily gone through 20,000 of these, and while I've seen plenty of errors, this is new to me. Yes, I know that proves nothing. Just saying they're not common or we all would have seen them.
QuoteJust saying they're not common or we all would have seen them.
Yeah, they've certainly been keeping them under their hat!
Goldie, I was actually hoping you or someone else here had won them.
QuoteHad I seen the sale, I would have bid a lot more than what they went for.
:i_agree: Me too!
I had a browse through the seller's feedback and he's sold a few lots like that, so keep an eye on that seller and some more will probably turn up. :winkextra:
I have just sent an email to the seller of those coins to see if he a scan of the 2005 Rabbit Ear.
If I get a reply I shall post it here.
If anyone of this forum sees another ad like the one above, could you please advise me by shooting off a PM.
Thanks

So nobody missed much.
Thanks for following that up Goldie!
That being the case I'm probably not spewing at missing it any more. With no 2005 on our combined list I was thinking WOW!
Does the 1985 make a count of 6 known now Goldie?
I am led to believe that is the figure at the moment.

I have one.
I bought it on ebay for about $7 as a BIN about three or four years ago. I would happy have paid $50 for it.
I can't find the list in this thread.
One I know of:
1984
1985
1994
1998
2000
2006
2008
2009
2010
There are more than one die for some of these years.
My collection of rabbits ears include;
1984 (from a forum member only I haven't found one myself)
1985 (one only)
1994
1998
2000
I don't have any of the recent years......yet! I might have to search for some :derisive:
I've scrolled through this thread and picked out the pieces for a wiki. Goldy your pics are there.
Rabbit Ear Wiki (http://wiki.australian-coins.net/wiki/one-dollar-rabbit-ear/)
I have been finding quite a few 2010 ears and they range from a tiny cud to this;

If anyone needs a more detailed scan of any of my errors that I have listed in my GALLERY, please PM me with your request and give me your private email address so that I can send a more detailed scan.

Yep, done, thanks.
I just found a 2006 rabbit ear/spew roo.
Cool find Ozcoins!!! Does it also appear to be a misaligned die strike?
Now that you mention it Uni, it does have a slight double rim too.
I thought you might be joking, but I guess you have one the same?

The obverse of mine had a MAD too from around 7:30 to around 11:30
I don't have it here, but I think that is exactly the same as my one.
I had not noticed the 'spew roo' and was looking at this thread to make sure 2006 had been included and saw Goldie's post about the rabbit ear, spew roo combination, so Thanks Goldie!
Oz, I'm keen to see how large both the cuds are on your 2006 when you get the opportunity.
There's no doubt that Goldie and the other forum members are a wealth of information.
Not a problem. Pickies of the Spew and Rabbit ears are at my Gallery above.

-2006 rabbit/spew roo
-1985 rabbit
-2013 flea in ear
I will try to get them up

This is a 1985 $1 with what looks to be an incomplete rabbit ears cud formation?
[attachment=2676]
Pedro
Pedro, sorry to say but I don't think that is a 1985 Cud. Me thinks it is just a mark on the coin.
I have seen many coins with similar marks that I have taken for a cud until I looked through my microscope.
Have a look at my 1985 Rabbit in my gallery.
In hand it looked more like a mark Goldie but under the USB it seemed to be a raised area with the highest point at the kangaroo's back and sloping away towards the ears.
Wasn't sure so will just keep looking.
Need better optics!
Pedro
The easiest way is to send it too me and I shall have a closer look. If it is I shall keep it, if not I shall allow it to hop back to you.

Goldseeker. I purchased the coin, and it'll be off to be slabbed and then tucked away in a dark place. The seller indicated he had an UNC one as well which is why this one was for sale. This one was sold to me as an aUNC.

Thats the nicest 1985 I know of.
Great condition, is that a small piece missing from the rump.?
Picked the 1985 coin up today.
Looks to have wear / hairlines consistent with light circulation. If it doesn't come backed cleaned (excessive hairlines) it'll probably make AU55 / AU58.

Hi Goldseeker,
I had a couple of these mixed in with a bunch of other coins.
I finally found one again and have it with me now. Not sure how well I will be able to photograph it, but I will see how it goes.
The area covered is basically a full size "rabbit ears", but as a slight depression into the background rather than raised out of the background.
Be good to see the scans Ozcoins.
Here is a pic.
Not great, but not bad for "phone + magnifying glass"
What year is that one please.
It looks more like a bubble rather than anything else.
2015
Bubble??
I am sure this is caused by the die cracking internally causing a raised part in die.
The next stage would be for the cracked part to break off which then leads to normal "rabbit ears".
So we can add 2016 to the list .....

ps being a local, i can say that the RAM is self funding - so technically folks can't be quite so high and almighty about them being 'public servants'. my hubby also works in a self funding government organisation & he cops the i pay your wages bullshit when his salary and taxes are all from a revenue base that has nothing to do with the public purse either
The only reason I resumed noodling was because other members of the forum were finding varieties that I needed in my collection. Now I am finding a few of those that I need myself and if I find multiples then I can offer paybacks to those that have helped me.
All good.
I have found (so far but, hopefully, more to come) one 2016 rabbit ear. Smaller than yours Goldie but similar appearance (like some of the 2010 ones).
I would say an earlier stage of die degradation than the one you found. If that is the case then there should be a reasonable number floating around.
Noodled a 2009 mob of roos that needed closer inspection. Looks to be the beginnings of the backpack which Mark has called the stegosaurus backpack.

For Fulvio: I didn't forget to put the img on the links. I left them off so people would go to my Gallery and look at the coins that I had linked and also to see the other variety/error coins that are pictured there.
Cool PPH, that one has also been referred to "bikini top" and "sun flare". Originally I hoped that it would be the start of a reverse arch resulting in a set of rabbit ears but all the 2009 rabbit ears I've seen are relatively small (and hard to come by) and don't include this so it seems to have ended it's run there.
Don't ya just love noodling!!!
Additional: Nevol referred to it also as "Floating Mouse Ears" in her 2009 errors thread.

Nice. Hard to tell from the pic, but I'm guessing that's a depression, not a raised bit? Which would suggest the usual chrome bubbling, except its started to break away leaving the flat 'steggy' cuds.
I very much doubt it would survive very many strikes like this before letting go completely, which would make this rarer than most.
Goldy: Ohhhhhhhh.... :dodgy:
PPH, does your coin also have a small round cud on the bottom of the large roo's stomach between the front and rear legs? (Closer to the front legs than the back though).
I've just dug mine out ..... have a few that have the die crack from the roo's back to the stegosaurus scales and some that just have the scales. Also some that have a curved die crack in roughly the same spot & shape, but without the scales.
Progression seems to be stomach cud & scales, then the die crack.

Been a while, but IIRC mine has just the stomach cud.
Dig em out McDuck!
The ones with the stomach cud, scales & die crack also appear to have a very fine splash cud on the top of the big roo's back, just to the right of it's nose tip.

Easier said than done. :(
I won't swear to which is which, or what combos they come in, but yeah, those two, plus a big cud on the back of his head on the right, and a small one above the O, making him a 'little boy' if you know what I mean. :dodgy:
Oh, and of course the tail cuds.

:laugh2: .... Just pullin' ya chain ......
I just tried to scan all mine to show the progression of each of the 3 types mentioned above (too busy to photograph them all) but gave up as the scans aren't that clear but I have worked out that the leftmost scale and stomach cud comes first, then the right scale, then the die crack from the back to the right scale & the splash on the big roo.
With the arch die crack ones (similar to that the joins the right scale) it is obviously a different die as none of the 5 I have involve the scales or the stomach cuds.
All is not lost ...... I had a photo on file showing the left scale & stomach cud version .....

An animation using images of the different stages of the dies demise would be AWSOME , I am certain that we have people here that are skilled enough to produce one :):good:
True Trout, some of Nevol's great error works show pics of the progression of many errors. I've done a couple on spew roos and rabbit ears but they were based on pics too.

That's an awesome idea.
Easy to do, yeah. hardest part though is getting the sequence of images exactly the same size and alignment. Obviously they need to be square on, with no tilt at all, otherwise they won't rotate/scale correctly.
Once the pics exist, its easy enough to turn them into a GIF.

I struggle just to take images of my coins let alone make them "Moove" :)
:laugh2: ..... Indeed Trout, I'm still using the scattergun approach!
Yes Fulvio, getting flat on pics of some errors is pretty hard to do and as you've so correctly said then getting them all at the same angle, shape and size would be a pretty big job. Unfortunately many of the errors I've had exist only in angled images now.
