Interesting quote from the Mint.!! Sound like they were still planning on minting halfpennies in 1965.! :dodgy:

Thanks Robster - that is great and confirmed what I had been told

I have been told that the 1964 penny was minted in 1965 (in Perth)

and I think there is something about the 1962 penny being minted a year later.

the story that I was told, was that with the planned introduction of decimal currency which was getting press in 1962, people started to hoard rolls of the pennies, consequently there weren't enough in circulation

which may happen to that purple coronation $2 - if it is intended to top up the available currency in the market place

ah I love seeing newspaper articles, is so cool that they tell you actual mintages and stuff, wonder what the other 31 commonwealth and foreign countries are.

Robster,

I think you will find that the newspaper article you refer to is talking about the Royal Mint in the United Kingdom, not the Australian Mint.

Mintage for 1944 of the halfpenny in Australia (as mentioned in the article) was actually very low and attracts a significant premium.

Cheers

oh, must of been in Melbourne!!
then when I was calculating mintages for my listings that i'm making up today
the 1944 halfpenny Melbourne was .72 million

But for the record, yes. Australian predecimal coins were struck in 1965, because we still needed to replace losses to keep the economy at normal levels. They all had "1964" dates on them. I assume the reason for hiding the true date was because they had already announced the intention to change over, and people would have complained if they saw brand new coins being issued that were going to be withdrawn and melted down again in a year.

Dunno. I don't collect 'em, and never bothered researching too deeply.

Hm, I don't recall off the top of my head but I think the Royal Mint stuck with the 1967 dies for their bronze until the end.
