Title: 2009 $1 M.O.R specimen coin
Post by: trout on July 11, 2013, 01:57:25 AM
In Maccas this coin is listed as being only issued at the Berlin Money fair.
However they were also produced in specimen quality in the wedding sets.
Maccas has the mintage at 500 but there were another 2,824 made for the wedding sets bringing the mintage up to 3,324 :ok:

I know it was discussed either here or CCF maybe. Did some searches with no luck.

I think the question was is it a proper specimen and the RAM annual report seems to think not.

I have the 2009 MOR coin from a wedding set and believe me it IS a specimen quality  coin:angel:
Maybe the ones sent to Berlin weren't.

Do you have a wedding set coin to put side by side with this one ?
this is mine, These are remarkably hard to photograph due to the blinding lustre present on the coin.

No I don't, but this "specimen" is not much better than a normal business strike.
In fact when I received the coin I rung up Downies to complain about the quality,
they were okay for me to return it for a refund as they did not have any more in stock.
But I kept it even though it has a small scratch on it, which I think is a bag mark.

Quotethis "specimen" is not much better than a normal business strike.

Looks like Downies have simply got a bunch of business strike coins and bagged and tagged them as "Specimen" coins :dodgy:
The wedding set coins on the other hand ARE specimen quality coins.
If you put a normal mint set coin alongside a wedding set coin the difference is readily apparent , The difference between the 2 coins is blindingly obvious :ok:
They will both be Uncirculated coins but the quality of the strike and the care taken with packaging is what makes these two coins totally different propositions

I like your input Interest and the replies
Wedding sets used to be specimens but now proof coins in them.
The Downies Berlin mint sets are the only ones I have heard of and I suspect they are all RAM mint sets with a different outer sleeve?

I bought the 2011 berlin mint set thinking it may contain something a little different to the 2011 Mint sets.
The coins are identical :dash1:

Not a problem... its the packaging that makes it special!
Oh wait, you're that guy who rips up all the packaging, aren't you? :Gigakach_01:

That's Me
The only mint sets or clamshells that are still in the mint packaging are the ones I have bought extras of.
ALL the rest go into 2x2's and in my albums.
I would rather do this than have to go through hundreds of clamshells or sets just to view a coin when I can simply open the appropriate album and there it is.
I know that if I leave them in there respective packaging they are worth more But I don't collect as an investment , I collect purely for my own selfish enjoyment :ok:
Anyway the early mint packaging and some of the new stuff is actually detrimental to the coins health anyway and should be removed.
Anyway each to there own way of doing things.
If I kept everything in it original packing I would need to build another shed just to store them

Yeah, I can totally sympathise on that one. Hence my efforts to pack them into the smallest possible volume.

When you buy the different mintmarked/counterstamped dollar coins they come in a cardboard sleeve that offers absolutely NO protection against toning, as far as I am concerned the sooner these are removed from the packaging and stored correctly the better.
The BP type PVC wallets are another prime example of why the coins should be removed as well :ok:
The PNC issues are another problem, they come in a nice envelope with a stamp and the coin is fairly well protected in a capsule .
They then put this in that stinking big PVC envelope :dash1:

I agree and do exactly the same thing.  it would create too much mess getting them all out and then to put it all away.

One album at a time is soooo much easier.
