Hello everyone I am the new guy.
I am starting to collect 50 cent coins and was wondering what year issue coins are the ones of more value, not so much as in proof issues and the like, but your everyday issue coin.
I own about 15 vending machines and usually have about $2000 a week in coin come through them so plenty of scope to collect.
I am also keen on collecting error coins, I have some which I am uncertain if they are true errors or if they have been tampered with.
I have always been into collecting coins and bank notes as I worked as a bank teller in the late 80s early 90s and had accumulated a considerable collection of notes of all signature pairs, even had a few star notes and note errors, I'd order in bank notes as head teller and go through them when they were delivered by brambles to find "those" notes, However my missus at the time cracked the shits with me and banked them all at face value, I was so gutted I never collected another coin or note, I had 100 in serial number order of the captain cook issue $10 note with the blue 26th Jan date, Phillips wheeler $20 notes in UNC condition, all up was about $5000 in face value alone, needless to say I left that relationship about 2 weeks later, bitch.
Anyways I am back in the game albeit only for coins.
So if anyone could post year issues that are worthy of collection I'd be really happy, I have spent weeks going through ebay to see what years are sought after, but it gets confusing and I mix up denominations as I am trying to do too much.
Anyway enough of my dribble.
ATM I am doing 50cent coins.
Looking forward to your help :wavemulticolor:

Your best course of action is to get hold of a Macdonald's or Rennic's coin guide book.
This will give you a basic idea of which coins are scarce/rare :ok:

Go the 50 cent!

Welcome to the forum!
Here is (some of) what I look for.
Anything in good condition before 1981
2001 state coins
2010 rotated (my favourite!)
2010 die clash under emus belly
2005 robe cud/chin cud
1979 double bar
1980 double bar
1991 ram
2000 royal visit
2000 incuse flag
Most of them are more "interesting" rather than valuable
1972 1973 and 1974 coat of arms are the rarer issue years and worth quite a bit in UNC condition
You may find this PDF I did useful, and the discussion in the Decimal Mintages thread: http://goo.gl/CdA7n
Not complete, by a longshot, but the 50ยข are all there, and the numbers are somewhat close. Its a work in progress, so check back occasionally as I update it. It was designed with an iPod/iPhone in mind.
Now, if I had a stable of vending machines providing $2k a week, what I'd do is look at them all under a magnifying glass, searching for errors. Keep anything shiny without even looking at it on the first pass. Keep any commemoratives, except maybe the high mintage ones. Keep anything unusual. Keep any low mintage years. Ditch the rest, and come back for a second pass when you have time.
When banking the rejects, I'd also turn them into $5 notes first (preferrably at a different bank), and check serial numbers before depositing them. Out of $2k you should have half a dozen first/last prefixes, radars, repeaters or UNC notes. You can also switch to higher denominations, especially $100 test notes.
Good luck, and welcome aboard. :)
1985 and 1993 are the lowest circulation years and rather hard to find. Even though official figures put 1985 as slightly higher mintage they are much scarcer in circulation than the 1993.
1991 ramshead is a favourite of many -small mintage so not common in change. And, most collectors would not discard a 2001 Centenary of Federation issue unless in very poor condition. Try to make up some sets of all nine.
Also, be aware of some of the varieties; 1970 tilted 7, 1994 wide date, double bars and a few others mentioned above. Then there are errors too (plenty of mentions of them in the forum).
Jeff
PS. That compilation is excellent Fulvio.

All good advice above.
I support anyone who likes the fifty!
Welcome :) I have a question though. Do many vending machines actually still take our unusually large odd shaped 50c?
How could I forget to mention my favourite -Incused millennium? Incuse Millennium 50c Variety (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2009/05/incuse-millennium-50c-variety.html) I must be losing it!
And that site is well worth a good look. MarkN and harrisk (purplepennyhunter) have been known to hang around this forum. :s
I thought all vending machines still take 50c?
I know some no longer take 5c though.
Thanks for all the replies lots of food for thought and getting educated, all good fun
The vending machines all take 50C peices, they cause the most problems too I might add.
Machines can be programmed to take/refuse 5c peices.
I have my machines accept them for the simple reason is that its all money.
And I know the 1972 one is worth a few dollars.
Thats a good idea Fulvio, I'll do that.
If you find one of these you will be doing rather well :ok:

However the Aussie coin is damn near faultless (mine is at least) :yahoo: anyone want the 50p and envelope :diablo:
Welcome :yahoo:. What to keep will depend on what type of collector you are. Everyone collects for different reasons. Options of the coins to collect have been listed well by previous forum members, but my favourites are;
2010 Rotated
2001 Federation State Coins
2000 Millennium Incused
1993 50c
1991 Rams Head
1988 Tall Ships
1985 50c
The high value coins (as I'm sure your aware) are the 2010 rotated and 2000 millennium incused.
Got my first rams head today in very good condition, stoked. It is a beautiful coin.

This batch produced the two clashes, a rams head, a couple of cooks (one of each 7), the mangled millennium rim cud, and a couple dozen assorted cuds. Oh, and an UNC 2013 with a lower lip cud. But...
STILL NO INCUSED FLAG! *CRY*:dash1:

Yes, I had only one Rams head.

I think all collectors dream about finding something exceptional and passing it on either as the coins or as a financial boost for their heirs .
That is investing in a way .
The best thing about collecting is ALL about investing in the pleasure and enjoyment of building your own personal collection, That to me is money well spent.
I have tried "Speculating" in coins but that has always been a disaster as I normally give the buggers away.
There are however a small portion of collectors that have the savvy to be able to invest and speculate in coins and do rather well for themselves, Good on them.
Everyone collects for different reasons and that is great, as long as we all keep this hobby alive and kicking, ALL is good .
:wavemulticolor:

Absolutely spot on. I have a range of hobbies, as do most people. Of all of them, this is the cheapest for me, because by pulling stuff out of circulation, they retain the full value of what I spent. But even in the bad old days of NCLT, it was still cheaper than say Golf, or many other "mainstream" pursuits.
Its all about the intangibles I reckon. Any financial rewards for me or my beneficiaries are purely coincidental.
QuoteAny financial rewards for me or my beneficiaries are purely coincidental.
Or simply a "By Product" of an enjoyable/selfish pursuit of a hobby that most people cannot/would not understand.
All is good Mate, the enjoyment factor is worth all the costs ten fold :yahoo:
There is something very special about these 1995 fifty cent pieces,
They were actually minted in 2003.
Also there were only 5,000 of these coins minted.
The main issue I have with them is that I can not find any difference between the 1995 pressing & the 2003 pressing,
so the original dies may have been reused.
Anyone add any or all information known about this release.
How many other coins have had dies used some eight years after they were first pressed.
So far I have been able to score 18 of them.

Maybe its just me, but there is something very not right about this kind of thing. What's to stop the mind deciding one day to start producing 1930 pennies and flog them off for say twenty grand each? They certainly have the dies, and the technology. And I somehow think the lack of moral fibre as well...
I also have a big problem with producing coins with years substantially different to when they were actually made.
Producing coins with a year in advance of the actual year I can understand for production/logistical reasons, but producing coins with a date that had passed just should not happen.
Thry should use an obverse die with the correct date matched to the old reverse.

This was a private issue for the Royal Australian Army medical Corps. The RAAMC was holding a conference at Healesville and they arranged for a momento to celebrate this activity. 5001 of the folders were produced and sold to those attending thwe event. However, not all were sold and they were eventually distributed to the Australian War memorial Shop and many other outlets for sale at $9.95. I visited the RAM and one of these folders were on the wall. I purchased two of them. I then showed them on a now defunct forum and they took off like a bushfire. I managed to secure 200 of them in original boxes from the Administration Officer, School Of Army Health some time later. I sold them for $10.00 each. There was one chap out of Sydney who was flooding Ebay with up to 20 at a time and one bloke was buying them up at between $130-$150 each. I was later able to contact this buyer who was buying them up for his Superannuation scheme. When I informed him that I could lay my hands on a good supply he was only prepared to pay $9.95 each as against the hundreds he was paying for them off EBay. I lost almost $26,000 profit (possible) but I sold all my 200 to fellow members on the then forum. Something like 87 went to one person in SA. I trust that this info is of some help to you. Please be advised that the only way to identify the reminting of this coin is to keep it in the folder. There is no difference between this coin and those issued for general circulation.

Yes that is all true. plus the fact that no records were kept as to the amount that was returned to the Mint after the RAAMC conference at Healesville. Of all the one's I have there is no way to tell when they were minted, a pity.

Whatever your thoughts are on this, it is a one off happening by the RAM to restrike coins 8 years after they were first minted.
Nobody knows for sure how many there are out there in the numismatic world it could be 500 or 5,000
So it has to be a coin of interest

All this is sounding like an "urban legend" .
As this coin was quite unpopular I imagine that the mint had
quite a stockpile of unsold coins in the regular new issue packaging.
I put it to you that the mint simply repackaged these coins in the RAAMC issue
and there was NO actual minting of these coins in 2003 :ok:
That thought occurred to me too, but I figured that
A the person saying they were minted later knew what they were talking about
B that the mint would not have that many lying around for so long.
I wonder if they were remade or old stock?

look at the figures in the different columns.
5002 items minted for a total of 1004 pieces, this to me makes sense as they would have minted the tokens (5002) and added 5002 50 cent coins from stock (1004).
EVERY other coin that has been re-issued at a different date has ALWAYS had the year it was re-minted on the obverse :ok:
I will stand by my guns and call this an "Urban Legend ".
There is NO way the RAM would mint a coin and backdate it 8 years.
Sorry folks, I beg to differ. This was a "one off" request and the RAM did REMINT the coins for this folder.
I can't prove it but I did have all the emails re this subject on my computer ages ago but lost them all when my computer packed up.
According to the RAM, a special run was made using the original dies for this RAAMC Re-Issue.

Then why are there only 5002 peices listed as being produced ?
Did the RAM mint the medallions that came with this issue or not ?
Has anyone actually asked the mint if they minted a coin dated 1995 in 2003 ?
If they did in fact do this then what is stopping them making 1930 1d and 19231/2 d. Coins ?
This subject raises some pretty pertenant questions and all the answers so far have
been hearsay.
If I am prooved wrong in this (would not be the first time) and the Mint did in fact Remington a coin 8 years later then IMHO they are guilty of gross misconduct and unethical behaviour.

Rather than prolong this discussion as to whether the RAM did or did not remint a coin. I have a few minutes ago sent an email to my contact at the RAM asking them the very question that we are tossing about here. I trust that the RAM will provide an answer that will satisfy all concerned.
Only time will tell.

I think your total of 1004 should read 10004, that is 5002 coins and 5002 tokens.
QuoteI think your total of 1004 should read 10004, that is 5002 coins and 5002 tokens.
That wasn't MY total, it came from the sheet that interest posted from RAM :ok:
I will await the reply from your email to RAM with baited breath
I can't offer much other than it is possible. It was questioned whether the mint could now go back and mint pre-decimal coins. They could up until the Currency Act 1965.
15 Treasurer may issue coins under repealed Acts for limited time
Notwithstanding the repeal effected by section 7, the Treasurer may, until a date to be fixed by Proclamation as the date on and after which this section shall cease to be in force, continue to cause to be made and issued coins in accordance with the repealed Acts.
The repealed Acts were those relating to pre-decimal coinage. No I'm not going looking for a 50 year old proclamation but I assume one was issued.
The logical conclusion was that the mint could produce any predecimal coins up to the repeal of the old acts so I guess there was nothing to stop them minted coins from previous years. Taking that another step I can't see anything in the Currency Act that says they can't mint coins from past years back to 1966. It certainly isn't the norm but there are some mentions in the production schedules of coins being minted with dates from 1 or 2 years earlier. Whether they were actually minted or just administrative catch-ups I don't know.
Alternatively Greg McDonalds handbook in 2001 identified 15,869,200 End of WWII 50 cent coins were minted. His current books haven't varied that figure but I guess it wouldn't be hard to overlook a limited issue of a further 5002 coins.
Interesting question whichever way it goes.

It is indeed a most interesting question.
If the RAM was allowed to do this once then they will do it again and it will have a direct bearing on every collector in Australia

Look again. Three zeroes, not two... 10,004
First off let me say I am not wanting to prove anybody wrong or cause conflict. I just thought I would bring this coin back to life because I was lucky enough to win two on ebay for $40.00
Here is what I know about the RAAMC.
A limited number 5,000 coins & tokens were created for the sole use of the Army, to commemorate the Centenary of the RAAMC.
They were never meant to be sold to the public.
The Army sent all unused sets back to the mint, which then sold them off through their shop at $9.95 (as per Goldie).
Even the Army did not know exactly how many sets were returned,
speculation is between 500 & 2,000
This is the first time that the RAM has officially confirmed it has restruck a coin.
As per their annual report in 2003.
I do not know if the Army gave them away or sold them.
I can not find any form of identification on the restrikes in order to differentiate them from the originals.
the ram re-did the $1 coin in a 1984 to 1992 $1 set UNC
All this talk of RAAMC, Weary Dunlop and the like is bringing back one of the highlights of my life. From 1988 through to 1994 I had the pleasure of working closely with Dr (Major) Alan Hazelton. Dr H would have to be number one on my personal mentor and inspiration list. I am so proud to have known him and love to recall the many stories he shared with me on our travels.
A couple of pieces:

Are 1972 & 1971 50cents coins worth keeping?
If they are in good condition then definately. Although I usually will keep a 72 unless it's damaged. Mintages 71 = 21.1million 72=5.6million. Hope that helps!
Quote from: 'Nikolce92' pid='22558' dateline='1374499618'Are 1972 & 1971 50cents coins worth keeping?
1971: 21,056,000
1972: 5,586,000
1973: 4,009,000
1974: 8,962,000So 71 would only be desirable in high grade. The others I keep any I find.
Currently noodling through 20c and 50c, I'm keeping good grades of most late 60s/early 70s 50c and 20c. Cheaper than buying mint sets and busting them up.
If you view decimals like pre-decimals then the 1972/73 could be equivalent to the 1914/15 respectively. The late 60s equal to 1911/12/13...and so on.

Yes it's definately cheaper to noodle but if you want uncirculated coins at a resonable price mint sets are the way to go

Good analogy there :good:
Still noodling 50c pieces and found another 2000 Incuse last Friday.
Just found a 1993 50cent coin :)
Nice work Nikolce92. My noodling efforts have dried up of late. Goldy appears to have the midas touch in terms of noodling.
I only wish that was correct coxspau. I did 400 x 50c coins, 1000 x 20c and 500 x $1 today for nuttin.
Boo hoo, might have to give the game away.........only joking!
That is a massive noodle. I wouldn't do that much in a month, let alone a day.
But when you said you didn't find anything, can you provide that in a relative context? I guess no wavy 20s, incused 50s or Mule 2000 $1...what about others? Royal Visit, Tall Ships, Rams head, Big head 2004s?
Yes, absolutely nuttin, zilch, zero.

Disclaimer: Goldy's definition of nothing is not like everyone else's.
Which I guess is a good thing for the next guy who noodles his rejects. ;)
:laugh2: Fulvio, you always seem pretty keen to get hold of them .....
It's the coins that Goldseeker rejects
That make noodling circ coins the best
I think he just likes to share ....
Nup, I just don't keep coins that needs a x20 or sumfin magnifier to bring up the faults etc.
I like to save errors that can be seen/spotted with the naked eye.
In saying that, the wife just dropped a 2000 Incuse into my lap that she got from ten pin bowling payments.
Nice Goldseeker :)
Interesting comment Goldy. I was only wondering last night about how many errors/varieties/radars/etc may pass by my better half without her knowing......if only she was interested.
try a double swap offer
if she finds a 50c error
give her $1
it could be fun
we sometimes offer the boys more for an interesting error
especially forgeries & they do keep an eye out for them as well
the sons have found us a $2 counterfeit & a $50 note counterfeit so that has been great (both work in retail)
Robbiegal ..... would you be able to put up a pic of the counterfeit $2. (or a link to one). I've heard of them but can't recall what they look like.
A DERRRR it looks like a $2 coin..sorry Uni, couldn't help it mate :friends:
:laughingneqw: ...... I deserved every bit of that AJ ......

Macca's is also a really good resource for 50c coins and all the other decimals :good:

According to my time stamps, I've been working on the update for over a month now.
Just spent a hour or two trying to tweak the page breaks. Still not happy, but it will do for now.
2014 will have to wait for the October update after the RAM report. Changeover and Olympics are in, as are bag sizes and weights. A few more varieties, including the possible 3-legged roo and 2014 mule.
Its uploading now to both sites after you pointed out the old one. :)
http://fulvio55.altervista.org is the 'proper' site though. And yes, I know I need to clean that page up.. a LOT. Waiting for my upcoming trip to the Murray later this month, since I'll be needing help from the usual suspects to keep my faucets alive.
Oh, apologies that the file size has doubled. Some higher-quality images did that. Must find a workable compromise. :dodgy:

Just so you know, this thing was never intended to be a printed book. It started as a HTML page for my own reference, then when I got my iPod I wanted a local copy I could refer to offline. So its basically aimed at mobile devices.
If I was going to turn it into a book, I'd change the layout a LOT, and make it about half the size. I already trimmed 5 pages off it just now. ;)
Yes it takes a bit longer to load up now.

Yeah, I know. :cray:
Originally, I used the tiniest images I could find. But then I found myself showing it to bank tellers when looking for new coins, and zooming in was rubbish. So I started grabbing better pics, and it sort of bloated from there.
I'm really going to rethink it from now to the next update, and see if I can come up with a better way that works offline. Maybe split it in two... a simple list and a book of eye candy. ;)
Maybe just do it in denomination so you click on the denomination you want but it all goes under decimal mintages, I don't know your the computer geek and I'm just a layman :)

That's already how it works in the HTML version. But the links don't make it through the PDF printing process for some reason. :(
Its much easier online, since you can just link to whatever size images you want. But offline it all needs to be packed in... sort of like those extra slices of cake you packed away at dinner. ;)
:cray: I can't help it, it just calls me..no bloody wonder I'm gettin so fat :(
:good: Excellent work Fulvio.

Thanks. Glad you like it. :)
BTW, forum tags are just like html tags, only in [] instead of <>. A block starts with a tag, like [ quote ] for example, and ends with a /tag. Putting the same tag at both ends isn't very productive. ;)
