Hi lacey, its not too bad. Gawd, I'm gonna sound like the dufus I am but what does x M S mean? Ex mint set?  Anyway, I need 2000 flip flaps which is gonna set me back heaps.

MS = mint state/uncirculated.
The saflips are way cheaper than self adhesive 2x2s.

Thanks Robbie.  with the 5c it was easy, once I set it up, because most are x mint set or as trout said, mint state, lol, without the X.  So all I had to do then was, clear the last number in the date and push the next number up the ladder.  Got all the 5c done in about 2 hours.  Only problem is, Dymo tape is expensive, but once it's all done, I hope I will never have to do it again.

Hello r9453, I am also just about out of flips.  I didn't realise I had so many single coins.

I would imagine Lacey is referring to ex mint set r9453.

Looks good!

Hi lacey, I bought 500 today, can't wait to get started. As for the paper inserts I'm not sure what to do. My handwriting is not too bad - I use a lot of that liquid paper that comes in roll-on strips. I saw in another thread that its possible to print A4 sheets and cut them up.

"Check my post on QR codes."

I read that earlier today, Fulvio. I was intrigued but didn't fully understand. So, you have that system up and running? I tried typing in a http address from 1 of the coins but it didn't work out. Is there an example of a link that actually references a coin?

My wife has just printed up 400 labels for my Penny error collection.  She created a proforma to use in safeflips along the lines of Enworbs idea.  I call it the Matty B system.  Instead of the supplied paper, she printed on 200gsm XL Multiboard by Quill available at Officeworks for about $10 a pack of 50.  This allows far easier insertion into the safeflip.  Printed 20 labels per sheet and used Fiskar personal paper trimmer for ease of cutting.  Also available to Officeworks for $30.  Great little machine.(http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/o787/robster836/064042bb-c784-4e9b-9fab-8c4f8bbc9751_zps3e3dc40b.jpg)

Its not up and running, because I only just thought of it, and my pictures are a total mess anyway, scattered over six computers and several online sites. But it will be, though the way life is now, it will take ages to implement. :(

The URL is the same one as in the code, and is there to be human-readable. You can scan the code, or type in the URL, both work.

goo.gl URL's are 5 characters long, and are comprised of Upper and lower case letters, and numbers. They ARE case-sensitive. These two are yF0je and X5Bfw, with a zero and five respectively.

QR codes have enormous potential. They were invented by Toyota to track parts in their factories, and are capable of storing just about any data, up to 4,000 bytes. That means you could include all sorts of details about a coin, including a link, your name and contact details, even an action, like sending an email, or buying it on ebay, right in the QR. The problem is the size increases with the amount of data stored. Might work with a flip, but certainly not in the margins of a 2x2. Which is why you want a short URL, perhaps pointing to a web page with all that info on it, rather than just a pic. I'll certainly be experimenting with some options. :)

Cheers mate, I'm still intrigued. Who owns the data? Not that mine is worth anything. I write the date, top right. Grade, top left. Bottom left I put a code that identifies the individual coin. Bottom right I put some kind of description but brief. On the back I write stuff as well.

my hubby uses a dymo thingee on his good coins
I just use a silver texta on my eagle mounts

That depends on where you store it. You should always retain copyright, but some services (Facebook comes to mind) try to steal the rights for themselves. But even then, there are billions of pics uploaded daily, so its not like anyone's going to steal yours and make a mint flogging T-shirts or anything. Choose your hosting carefully if this is an area of concern.

Remember that QR codes can point anywhere, or contain data directly embedded in them (so they work offline). That "where" can be on your local network, on FB, G+, here, or anywhere at all you wish to park your data. You can even get redirections you can edit at a later date. QRstuff.com has such an editable redirection service I believe, though they may charge a premium for it. The intention is that you can publish a code in a book, magazine or a business card, and update what it does anytime you feel like it, without worrying about the copies already out there. Useful in some circumstances, possibly for coins too.

Oh, and as a late thought, I've been thinking of data organisation behind this whole thing. I'm now leaning towards a web page for each item, since that can contain descriptions, pictures, etc, and be readily updated. Nothing fancy, just a few lines of really minimal HTML will do, easily knocked up with some cut and paste. Since each page needs its own url, it may as well be significant, and it also may as well be a unique identifier. So how's this for a scheme? Taking those two Wavy 2's as an example, I'd use ID's like these:

1966020v123456
1966020v123457

Where 1966 is the year.

020 is the denomination, 001 to 200 for coins, notes and other things could also be handled with the unused values.

v is Variety. e would be Error, f would be Flaw. Normal coins could be graded, say a through d, or any other unused letters.

123456 is a sequence number, which allows a million items. It could be sequential, or assigned type by type. Either approach has benefits and shortcomings. Oh, and for notes you would use the serial number here. You could even use the denomination and type differently, say 05BA for a BA prefix $5. Something like 200905BA123456 which would be a $5 note, BA09 123456. In the case of a $100, you could get sneaky and use 00 as the value, so 199600CP955019, which is this test note I have in my hot little hand right now. ;) (Note that case IS significant in the filename component of a URL, so abc.com/a.html and abc.com/A.html are two different files, whereas abc.com/a.html and ABC.COM/a.html are the same). If used this way, notes and coins are distinguishable by the two capital letters vs the single lowercase, and everything will sort reasonably well in the one database, or perfectly in separate ones.

There could also be a collector identifier on the end, something like initials, or a club membership number, or whatever, but that would only be useful if such a system were widespread and duplication was likely.

Why such a long number you may ask? Well, apart from the likelihood some people would have a million coins, it allows blocks of reserved numbers. So you could have all your cuds in the 100000 range, cracks in the 200000's, and so on. As long as the complete ID is unique, it doesn't matter how you slice it. So then you'd use the ID as a serial printed on the label, and as the URL, as in 1966020v123456.html, which you would put wherever you were going to store your pics and pages, then pass to the URL shortening service to get the link for the QR code.

Have I confused you yet? Its really easier to implement than to explain. ;)

For the rest of us putting a Label on a Holder,
just bung it through your printer,

That's pretty neat, I wondered about that. Would it work on any printer? I suppose if you had an upside down font you could use both sides of the holder :) Or 2 print runs would do the trick.

Yes, with proviso to Any Printer.
The card stock of the 2X2 are not ideal for Ink Jets.
Will print fine but don't handle the 2X2;s for a few hours
until the Ink drys.

Use a Mono Laser printer no problem. (No colour either)

And, use on the Self Adhesive 2X2's only, the staple type tend
to be slightly bowed and will drag across print head in Ink Jets,
and tend to fail to feed in laser jets.

Perhaps you may be correct on some laser printers.
Not having tested all laser printers I wouldn't know.
I do know it dosn't on mine.

Will possibly find out when I need to replace my little Brother HL1240.
The toner and drum cost three times as much as a new printer.
And at the current price of a new Little Brother being under $50
it dosn't really bother me too much.

Try it, don't try it the choice is your's and your's alone.
