So I won this Penny for a cheap price on Friday. It was listed as a "Broken 8" variety. (http://imageshack.us/a/img13/4351/australian1928pennyrevb.jpg)
What I didn't notice until I got it home was that it also had a broken "O" in OMN: on the Obverse. (http://imageshack.us/a/img254/1461/australian1928pennyobvb.jpg)
Twice the errors for half the price. Bargain! :yahoo:
The 1928 Penny can be found with these 'broken' letters/numerals, cuds etc...
Broken bottom of 8 in date
Broken top of 8 in date
Broken O in OMN
Broken O in GEORGIVS
Broken 2 in date
Broken D in FD
Cuds on 2nd M in COMMONWEALTH
Cuds around OMN
Plus another I'm not too sure about, is a missing base to the I in Australia.
I'd say your coin has more of these than you've picked up so far. :winkextra:

What do you know that O in GEORIVS is missing a certain something and that D in FD isn't complete either!
Thanks Nancy.
my count is 7 breaks
not so sure about the cud in comm
I have never seen one of those
nice coin Splock
Definitely scored a bargain with this coin, many breaks on the one coin.!!!:yahoo:
The 1928 Multiple Break penny.
(It is actually Die Fill)
I'd rank it equal first to be collected by Penny Variety Collectors.
(The Other would be the '64 "Star" Die Crack)
Reverse :-
1: Die Break bottom of 8 in Date
2: Die Break top of 8 in Date
3: Die Break top of 2 in Date
4: Die Break in base of U in Australia
5: Die Chip in front of P of Penny
(Without this "Dot" very scarce in combination with the other errors present)
6: Die Break top of O first O of Commonwealth.
At this point in the Die's life the First Leg of the second N in penny
is becoming very thin as well.

Obverse :-
7: Die Break Bottom of O of OMG
8: Die Break Bottom of D of FD
9: Die Break Bottom of O in Georgivs.

Fabulous photos Fordprefect ...... along with your usual exceptional penny analysis :good:
oh dear
I will be combing through my 1928's tonight!!
So much easier to find these with such beautiful photos. thanks Ford Prefect. (once again).
I have got 2 of them all but not that number 6
Sure that it's not just some die fill happening there on the O?

All the so called breaks on this particular poor sod of a coin
are Die Fill.
If you have a large hoard of them you will also find
the base of the G's in George also filled and most of
the D's also suffer the same fate.
But they don't appear on the Multiple Error coin's.
The missing Die Fill error on that coin I put up is the
10 error job with Die Fill removing the Base Serif's from
the
I in Australia.(Can't find it)
Very scarce variety to find without that Die Chip Dot (5)
and All the other Fills present.
I corrected my earlier reply
I have 2 of the ones with the dot
but not a hoard (12 of the various broken this and that)
i'll have a closer look through them now
found this beauty today
has been harshly scratched in the past but still a very groovy error coin!
also has a tiny edge clip which is separate to the die errors

Robbie I think there is more going on with that coin.
I'm thinking it's a later stage die strike.
1. U of Australia starting to fill
2. Die chip at base of last leg of last A of Australia
3. Possible die chip or cud inside base of E in Penny
(http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv160/ford_prefect/Australian%20Coin%20Forum/Robbies_19281dReverse_zps09319844.jpg)
Yellow Arrows
Cud form in base of E of One
Something going on with 1st N of Penny
Die chip or cud on leg of P of Penny

Someone forgot to highlight the scratches.............
too cool
thanks Dr. Fordie
no Prof. Robster - not a new camera but I am trying to educate myself more on how to use the thing - bought it in feb when the first grandie came into the world
I think the scratches are proof like die polishing Goldie
coin must be worth a fortune!! ha ha

Ooooh.. really?
I must rush off and place an order with the Trout Mintâ„¢ for some of their FdT
(Fleur de Trout) coins with extra polishing then. :)

I was looking at a few coppers and noticed this one, is it a known "variety" ?

IT's definately a known variety and would think it's quite common as I've had a few over
the years and they didn't seem to stir up much interest when I was selling them

Yes not too "shabby" :)
It has two other breaks on the "2" and also the top of the "8", the second "N" is weak legged but I cant find a dot before the "P" in PENNY.
A few more pics.

Some of those 1928 Pennies can have quite a lot of 'bits' of the letters or numbers missing.
I think I remember the most 'missing bits' from one coin was 9, that was on the old ACBO forum and I think the poster was QldSandy.
There're some lists of the known 'missing bits' in some earlier posts in this thread.
I'll quickly add this one, last year sometime I was in an auction bidding on a broken 8 variety and noticed something a tad different with the coin. It was missing part of the bottom scroll. Bidding ended up going higher than I wanted to pay for it but thinking back, I haven't seen another one since.
humm
I don't have too many but I will have a look through mine
Fordie knows heaps about this error - perhaps he can enlighten us!
