Title: Welcome r9453!
Post by: r9453 on May 19, 2013, 12:42:40 AM
What does CBL and FBL mean in regard to 1920 pennies (no-one would ever say pence in this context, right?). Does it have something to do with fonts?

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob
my suggestions:

CBL may be the respective Mints
i.e. Calcutta Birmingham  and London

FBL -probably flat based letters in the legends (yes the font type)
the alternative to the flat is the curved based letters (CBL)

and welcome

Thanks robbie I think you might be right with your second idea. I'm pretty sure the 1920 pennies were all actually minted in Melbourne or Sydney. The 1920 penny is a bit of a shemozzle. I haven't managed to get my head around it.

That seems to be the general consensus, but during recent reading I came across http://www.sterlingcurrency.com.au/files/1922PENNYSPECIMEN.pdf which at the bottom of page 5 says some 1920 dated pennies may have been struck at Perth.
I saw it mentioned in an ad recently but only today found what I think is the source.

Thanks for that link. I read that there were in fact 1920 Perth pennies, albeit struck in a different year and less than 100k.

Whereabouts did you read that out of curiosity?

I read it here 1920 pennies (http://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=1043) and in the pdf you linked to above, sorry no alternate source. You are way more on top of this than I am.

Ah right. It feels like every new bit of information I find conflicts with something else I've read about those 1920 pennies. Too bad Melbourne and Sydney didn't use the M and S mintmarks they were told to.

Is Neal from the CCF here? I was gobsmacked to read that he had examined 10,000+ 1920 pennies!

I don't recall seeing him here but I might be wrong. Talk about patience though.

How To - link to a post in an old thread.

There is a button in the bottom rh corner of each post with a green plus sign (with a hint "quote this post") when you click it turns red. That didn't seem to work but copying the url from the address bar did the trick.

Here's another thing I've noticed when you type a quick reply it gets appended to your last post.

I presume no-one is ever going to read this because it will never show up as a new post?

OMG it didn't get tacked onto the previous post.

Edit: I said thread but I meant post.

I wonder if you have to wait 24 hours?

No worries triplewitch! Unread post, indeed, I wondered about that. I see Unread post sometimes. Boy, triplewitch you caught me off guard there. I thought I was talking to myself there for a minute, ha-ha.
