Title: Proof 1981
Post by: MattGold on May 08, 2013, 12:35:36 PM
I'm unsure about 1981 proof 3 1/2 claw 20 cent coin? Are they valuable?

Cheers Matt

I know about the 3 n 1/2 claw on the circulating 20 cent but can't seem to find much on the proof version

There is a proof variety 81 set,but it is not the 3 1/2 claw variety we see in circulation coin, the claw on the oposite side of the flipper is missing on the proof coin.
Yes they are a variety but personally i see them as no more collectable than the standard set.

So if I was to come across a 3 and a half claw 1981 proof, the ones you see in circulation, would it be worth keeping or letting it go?
It's just that I have seen in the past that some proofs are actually worth less than the UNC version of the coin itself. "Talking about all proof coins there".

If it the same as the circulation 3 1/2 claw,i'd definitely be keeping it,actually i'd keep them whether their the same as the circulation or the other variety if i could get them at a cheap price.
Some seller are asking upwards of $200 for the supposed 3 1/2 claw proof sets.

ANYTHING out of the ordinary is worth keeping, if you found it. If you're thinking about buying it for more than face value, well, that's another matter entirely. I laughed when I saw a supposedly UNC 3 1/2 claw for well over $100 a while back.

I can't seem to find anything on 3 1/2 claw proofs which is making me hesitate buying this coin. It looks like it has the 3 1/2 claws, I just don't want to post the page up here because I'm afraid someone else will pick it up and I'll miss out, I know that sounds selfish of me but I really want it if it is the claw variety.

I've showed one mate the picture of the coin and he says it looks like the 3 1/2 claw, I think I will buy it but I really want to find out a value on them first..

I just confused myself writing this so sorry if anyone got confused!:dodgy:

Matt, Here some pics of the original circulation  3 1/2 claw, not my pics so thanks to whomever took them ( i got em from google images )
A & C are 3 1/2 claw  B is the normal.

(http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo339/appeangel07_photos/29-9-08/new%20coin%20album/20120324_20cent35clawbottomSmall_zps70dcbbaf.jpg) (http://s389.photobucket.com/user/appeangel07_photos/media/29-9-08/new%20coin%20album/20120324_20cent35clawbottomSmall_zps70dcbbaf.jpg.html)

Every proof  "3 1/2 " claw i've seen has the opposite end claw missing, instead of the inside claw like the circulation coin.

Nice photos for sure, thanks buddy. The proof that I seen definitely looks like the 3 1/2 claw variety. So would anyone have a rough estimation on what a proof 3 1/2 claw would go for?

Here's the proof set with a nice pic:

BTW, I also found a few "proof" coins that are no such thing. So be careful.

Cheers mate but I'm talking about the other variety with the 1/2 claw to the left, not to the right. thanks.

I know. But what we're saying is its probably not a proof.

If the coin is proof then it's the only one that i am aware of,so no idea of value sorry.
But i'd be very sceptical about it being a proof coin,is the coin still in a set or is it a single coin ?

I am sure Downies were selling UNC 3 1/2 Claws several years ago for around $90.00 something.

Does such a thing exist? I thought the left 3.5 claws were all struck in Canada as circulation coins.

It is definitely a proof coin, the seller has other1981 proof 20 cent coin for sale too but this is the only one that looked like the 3 1/2 claw.

As MrT said all the 3 1/2 coins were Minted in Canada, all proof sets were RAM.
I guess if it's the only one in existence it's probably worth having, but i'd be asking the question ,are these set officially recognised as a variety/error  ? if not then i would'nt be spending hundreds of $$'s on them.

I'd be wanting to see lots and lots of highly detailed photos, proving it was proof, not UNC. This was before they started frosting them, right?

I will find out when I get it I spose, I'm paying over $10 but under $30 so I'm not really complaining, it's a risk I'm willing to take lol. It is not being sold in a set.

It could just be a RAM proof that was struck with a filled die - I don't think 3.5 claws are unheard of on RAM coins but you can tell if it's a real RCM 3.5 claw by looking at the obverse.

Lol now someone tells me haha, like I said though I'm not to fussed if it is or isn't. Would be real nice if it turned out to be one. Isn't that what the 3.5 claw is from though? a filled die.  Or does something else cause this?

Yeh that's exactly what I was thinking, either way I will own my first proof coin. :yahoo:  The 3.5 claw would just be a bonus for me.

Matt

Well I figured how to grab the image that was shown in the advertisement, will take other pics when it rocks up.. If it isn't the 3.5 claw I'm still gonna be happy with the purchase. :wavemulticolor:

It seems that the Canadian 1981 20c pieces intentionally had 3.5 claws as opposed to just a filled die.

I'd dispute that. They're not all 3-1/2 claws. I haven't been keeping score, but would guesstimate less than a quarter are. But I do agree its a different die, and not a fill.

Really? I've only ever bothered checking the obverse after looking for 3.5 claws so I've never noticed.
And I guess the Canadian 3.5 claws is a real variety because there's no variation in the claw length?

I know I've only just purchased this coin but I want it in my hands already!! I'm so keen to take a closer look at those claws. I've looked and looked on google and I can't find any information on a 3.5 claw proof 1981 20 cent coin. From the previous posts on here it is making me think it's a one of a kind but I'm just not that lucky:dodgy:

I'm sure others would exist but I don't think die fills and the like tend to be well-documented.
Or maybe others do exist and the owners have just never bothered to take a closer look.

Not sure. Sometimes an interesting error can command a premium but it could be dependant on how well known it is.
