None in front of her chin, that's toning. But yes some on her neck and some behind her neck. Stay tuned we picked up an amazingly clashed Aussie 3d on the weekend, I'll post up an image of that shortly. It's pretty awesome :)

Back to New Zealand. I have just sorted through a little over 3.5kg of NZ halfpennies to try and get close to a couple of sets. Well, not quite two sets (close) but this one caught my eye...

Edge in the clipped areas looks same as the rest; no file or grinder marks I can see. Denticles aren't distorted and edge at clip is not thickened as you would expect with hammer blow, jammed in vice etc.
What should I make of it? PMD or a genuine error?

I am leaning towards real. The denticles in the clipped areas are a different shape to the normal ones suggesting metal flow towards the missing area. It must be from the corner of metal strip because the missing regions appear to be 90 degrees apart.
My first thought was planchet was stamped at corner of stock but that would give two, straight clips -these are slightly convex.
Mark's comment about metal flow may be the key; the straight portion would flow into empty space thus making a convex shape.

Like all series, some years and denominations are tougher than others. The 1940's and 50's are pretty easy to finish off. I'm finding the 1920's the toughest period. I bought this the other day. I didn't like my chances of ever getting an Aussie coin like this, so this will have to do and I've only just noticed it has an outline to Lincoln's face.
Very nice out of collar Lacey. The outline is due to the clad copper layer splitting as the metal flowed outwards.

I love the toning on the reverse of the quarter anna but the obverse just looks wierd with the copper/gold colouring.
I don't think I have seen colour like this on a silver coin before.

It's bronze not silver. The colouring reminds me of a few wildly toned 1964 pennies that PPH has squirrelled away in her hoard.

No, not graded. The top three came from a very blurry image on eBay for the princely sum of $10. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

I wonder if they were engraved by the same person.
Looks like a Wyon originally did Canada's 1c and W.H.J Blakemore redid it but I can't find any information on who engraved British India's dies.

They look like some nice thick die polish lines on the 1/4 anna
Yeah i think they're the biggest/most die polish lines i have ever seen.
What's up with the rim beading on the 1/4 rupee? It looks kind of inconsistent.
The rubber grommet in the slab oozes a bit around the rims. Closeup with the loupe the rims are fine. One of the reasons they moved to pronged holders I guess.
I saw a US dime on CCF with very deep die polish lines but yours is very close. Nice!

I was lucky enough to be able to upgrade my (now sold) 1905 maundy set to this lovely set that arrived yesterday. The only gripe is that the 1d is the worst holdered coin I've ever seen, it's about to pop out of the grommet.

The crown coins proved that unpopular that they were discontinued early in the piece in 1938.
My advice is just get a realy good nick 1937 crown and bugger the 1938 BS priced coin. :good:
I myself do have a 1938 crown but the 1937 examples I have are in far better nick at a fraction of the price.
These are virtually an NCLT coin because most people didn’t like them, So why not just spend the extra $$$$$ on a good 1937.

I deal in sovereigns, but I collect anything that is esoteric and related to sovereigns.
I suspect not cheap either -almost regret my facetious remark about a uniface coin on another thread (not really).
Would it not be really incredible to get an obverse and a matching reverse!

It's been a very slow 3 months for me coin-wise. However I managed pick up a couple of cheap slabs off of eBay last week and found some nicely toned big silver coins while at our favourite coin shop today. I believe the Portuguese coins are the first ones I've got from that country. The obverse of the 50 reis looks very much like a dump.

Cool score :) they all look pretty good but I think I like the irish one as there's just something about it, it look different and I think it's because it doesn't look like it has a rim if you know what I mean..looks flat to edge of the coin..I think it makes it look older than 66 but still all very nice :)
The 1966 Irish coin has a very dished strike. The rims are very thick and edge lettered. I've been wanting one for a while and this one was the right price (cheap) and had the sort of toning I like.
Ahhh I see, thank Markn :) seem to be a fair few coins with writing on the rim but a lot I have still have the normal rounded rim like ours. I'll have to see if I have any that are dished as well :)

I worked part time in a pub in Pt. Adelaide during that year. We had visits from all the Tall Ships from around the world as well as Navy vessels from the U.S.- New Zealand- France- Spain and of course the British Navy. Made for some very memorable and late nights.!

Kel, top one is a Norwegian 10 Kroner from 1984. Mintage 11 million and catalogues at a dollar or two in EF. The second one is Thai 10 Baht coin from 2008. Mintage is 18.5 million and it's probably only worth face value.

Mark I notice that three of the coins coins seem to have parallel lines. Ive noticed these on other German coins of the same period as well. I take it theyre die polishing marks rather than hairlines.
Die polish lines are raised and not incuse like a scratch or polish line. They also stop conveniently at the edge of design (and don't run over it) and usually start straight back up after.

What she said. Yes, they are die polish lines. Sometimes die polish lines DO extend over the design, I have a penny somewhere that is like that. But that's very uncommon.

My first coin buy in a while. Bolivia 1830 PTS JL 4 soles (I always neededA sole). I am about 90% certain it's an 1830/20 overdate. I'd grade it gVF or even better because the issue is horribly struck on very poorly prepared planchets. It was cheap, it was cheerful, and it's nice and original. And pretty cool for a 180 year old coin.

I have the same British Colombia dollar and the toning on the reverse is the same as yours also on the obverse the toning is lighter.

The commemorative dollars of that period (early 1970's through the late 1970's) were released in felt lined boxes with the obverse face down in the felt. The other side had a soft piece of foam between the coin and the lid to stop the coin from moving around. The foam caused that side of the coin (invariably the reverse) to tone all sorts of amazing colours. The felt which encased the obverse didn't tone that side. I have a number of them and only sent these ones because we needed the numbers to fill out a submission.
And here's the latest addition to our stable of mules. This one a New Zealand / Bahamas 1967 2c mule. MS66BN and the only one graded MS66. It's a lovely colourful brown coin and very glossy.

Found this on eBay a couple of weeks back where it was unattributed. I am quite partial to crusty counter-marked colonial coins and this one fit the bill perfectly. I'm fairly certain it's a Mozambique 1889 Rupee (KM#53.2) with the later PM countermark on a Indian 1840C Rupee (KM#458).

Thanks Robbiegal. Hercules is indeed one lucky dude, although when I was younger I thought it was Jesus! When I was growing up I had an 1875 5 Francs with this design on it and its beauty is one of the reasons I'm a collector today.

I stopped collecting coins about 2 weeks ago (sold my collection to a member here), my collection was nothing great, quite small and consisted of mainly British Commonwealth stuff. Anyway I'm a keen metal detectorist, and detect as much as I can. On Friday I had a good day out and came across two gold rings, I sell most of the stuff I find and did so with these. So I have $300 or there abouts, and what do I do,I go and start buying[attachment=2662] more coins. Couldn't get much further from British Commonwealth, but low price and I took a fancy to it, Who knows what I'll start collecting from here, have my eye on some thalers. For any who are interested, I'll post a picture of the rings. Not sure if the link will work?

It looks like the St George reverse was only used in 2003 for the 1700th Anniversary of the death of St George.

Was in a pawn shop this morning (Sat - 11 am....Perth time 1 am Sunday) looking at coins. I spotted this Unc Republic of Liberia $5 coin (40 mm) for 'only' $3 U S. WOW, I thought. I got home and found out the exchange rate is 85 to one U S dollar, so I spent $3 on a $5 coin worth around 6 cents U S. Heck, I could always drill a hole in it and use it as a fishing weight.

The coin is the last few yrs of the proof (S mintmark).
I generally go by eBay prices and mintages.
Year - normal eBay Price - Mintage
2010 -------$9.................1.69 million
2011-------$10.................1.45 million
2012..........$15.................1.19 million
2013...........$9..................1.18 million
The 2012 proof set, both in clad and silver really caught on fire a yr ago. I learned of the value of the sets last summer. Around September, I went to our local coin shop and evidently he didn't keep up with pricing. I purchase all of the 2012 clad and silver proof sets he had ......$37 for each clad set and $80.50 for each silver set. Now in 6 months, the price for the clad set is $100 and for the silver set it's $188.
That is why the price of the 2012-S (above) is $15. Now look at the mintage of the 2013.....it's lower and the normal selling price on eBay is $9. Recently I've purchased the 2013-S for $5 ea. I have another order in for another 40 coins at $5 each. Are all my eggs in one basket? I don't think so.

It was a happy day at my PO box today with three new purchases showing up.
The first is an NGC MS64 1901 Florin for my 1901 Great Britain set. It came with a neat fossilized shark tooth :)

The second is a 1s6d 1812 bank token. Perhaps just touched off but nice and original and the way I love them. This one was a blurry eBay punt that paid off.

Yes. The ability to tune the focus manually from the computer has really improved our capability to take images of tilted coins. The auto focus mechanism on this new camera (and the old one) fail miserably when the coin is tilted so being able to do this is a huge benefit. For those who are wondering tilting a coin is a great way of bringing out the colour in toned coins (like the 1901 florin above).
I am not sure the colour saturation is quite right with the new camera yet. It still needs some fiddling to try to improve things.
If you think you need to improve the photos above, then I think you couldn't any better than what I/we can see already posted.

Thanks, it's not a bad set. It's in a polypropylene sleeve with the coins pushed into holes in a cardboard holder. It's funny because the silver coins have all toned while the bronze cent and nickel dime haven't toned at all. I thought bronze was more reactive than silver. Here's the last two coins from the set.

Doesn't really bother me. This set is in a third party holder and no doubt the coins were pulled out of circulation which explains the roller mark. There are 1967 proof like sets issued directly for the collector market that are in much better condition.

Well somebody (ausjack?) must have been asleep back in '66 not to notice that some far off place (Canberra) also put out silver 50 cents, bronze 1 and 2 cent coins and Cu-Nickel 5, 10 and 20 cent coins.
Lots of countries have used all 3 metals simultaneously in circulating coin sets. Egypt did, so did India.
If you don't count Cu-Ni coins as nickel then the list gets somewhat shorter. Germany had a bronze reichspfennig, a nickel reichsmark and silver 2 and 5 reichmark in 1938 and 1939

$30 or so for these unofficial sets. The silver coins are 80% silver and there's 1.1oz of silver in the set. I paid $29 plus postage for this one.
There's a couple of official RCM sets that were released in a felt lined boxes and the silver coins in those invariably tone blue. You pay a bit more for those ($75+) because the toning is desirable. Original RCM mint or PL sets packed in cello are about $35 or $40, those coins are not usually toned.
I like these sets (and US 90% silver sets) because they are a fun way of getting a bit of silver for not much above melt. They are much more interesting to look at and the toning can be very cool.
I have a beautiful 1964 penny - with that same marking - what you guys were calling 'roller machine scrape'- it breaks my heart EVERY time I look at it - PCGS won't slab ones with that? or will they?

I just looked at an enlarged pic and the one is sort of squishy looking rather than being weakly struck - the 4 is also chunky/lumpy looking - the dot after the Y is also referred to as a 'pellet' rather than a dot & close up the letters in penny are a bit dragged out and large - it is a very cool die variety this one - not all that many look out for them but I do

my coin dealer says he remembers when he was kicking around Sherwoods many eons ago and the girls out the front would make up penny sets - they used to use a tube that they wacked onto the coins with a hammer and then the coin would flatten into the dansco type albums or cardboard coin sleeves

Yep, that's my 'Camera'. Any pics of mine with a cream border are taken with the KB Scope. It comes with software and yes, a click of the mouse takes the pic. There's a button on the scope, but for me it causes movement, so I prefer to use the mouse.

what sort of light source do you use?
The scope has 8 Built-in LED's and that's all I ever use. Coins in slabs, sorry, I don't have any, but in 2X2's, I tilt the scope and stand just far enough for the reflection to disappear from the mylar and then click. Did you see what I use for stands (or light tents, if you like) in the post where Steve shows his set-up?
My set up is just a tad more expensive than Steve's, but the results are OK for my purposes. I just can't justify spending hundreds of $$$'s for camera, lights, stand etc. I'd rather spend the $$$'s on coins.
For editing I use Photoscape which can be downloaded free.
Moneta 2 Zlote 2008. I bought this one recently, reason, my Nana died recently and just before she passed away she was looking through my Collecting world coin book and noticed this coin. Nana told me that the building on this coin which is the city hall in Bielsko-Biala, that when she was a child she walked past this hall every day on her way to school. So I'm going to get a frame made up with her photo and this coin next to it. If I wasn't collecting coins this is something I would of never known.

The latest addition to my Great Britain 1901 set. The maundy set. Been looking for a decent one for several years. Just the half crown and shilling to go. I am a bit excited too because I've got a new purchase coming soon which is an upgrade to one of the other coins in the 1901 set.

Yes sure mate, I will take some detailed photos when I get them... the 56 is very nice looking.
I don't think I would get in to World coins that much, however I would collect the odd coin here and there to have a mixture of coins from all over the world.

To be certain of anything over MS65-66 I would need to have the coin in hand.
Mark takes superb images but the eye appeal, Lustre, Strike and Wow factor is what makes a coin MS67 upwards and for me I find it impossible to tell that from any image.
All good mate just having a go :) but yes I am slowly working it out even from pic's, lookin at fields, high and low points and colour are a few so I just hope I can live to 347 at least and I reckon I might be ok by them if I can make it..what'd ya reckon me chances are :winkextra:

Trout,have you got the 1992 MOR? They are supposed to be the hardest to find. Somebody paid over a grand for one at Downies back in 2012 (lot 2493).
If you have not got one then I recommend a bigger hat:taunt: 'cause you might have to wait a while till another comes along.

Sounds like a "Mint Sport" coin and has really no place in my collection, I only collect circulating and nclt 25mm coins.
Mules, rabbit ears and mint sport coins don't really excite me much because they were or are not intended to be released.

Yep, it's a 1945 Indian Princely States (Indore) 1/4 Anna, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, that's exactly what I got too. Took me a few minutes to recognise the cow. I thought for a while it was the guy you see on Baroda coins and was struggling to ID it. Once I saw the cow the penny (1/4 anna?) dropped.

I acquired these coins today in exchange for some cash and a coin the dealer wanted. I hope they are real. The weights are good and they appear to be die struck. The 1919 has some pretty cool die clash. I'll be sending the 1919 and 1920 to PCGS, which is more than worthwhile even if they end up in no-grade genuine slabs. The 1934 I'll keep raw as it's about the most common Chinese dollar you can find.

I have to show my ignorance here, Where are the dates on these I cannot read Chinese :angel:
Chinese reads right to left. On both types coins the year is on the obverse. On the top coin is the =+ and then three lines. That's 23 in Chinese. On the fat man dollars it's the fifth character from the right, the 1919 is the numeral 8 and the 1920 is the numeral 9.

looks very similar to yours i.e. soft detail on the cloak
the rim beads are neater on that unc one as well
yours looks to have suffered the effects of die clash
but they are still cool coins

Yes it is RG but so small it's like a tiny little button, about half the diameter of a five cent but double the thickness so it's not coming out of the saflip for fear of losing it and I'd be totally gutted if I did.
if you have a heat sealer you can seal the flip so that it doesn't fall out

I only have a few world coins and most were picked up quite some time ago
the hubby is the one who likes the pretty world coins
Once you have "Been there done that" with the Aussie pre decimals and decimals you tend to gravitate to other areas of numismatics.
I have done this with US and Canadian coins, now I am starting on brit rule Indian coins and the Maundy sets.
Numismatics is an ever evolving thing for me :angel:

Just got a heap of "Straits Settlement" coins from my late father-in-laws coin collection. 1 album full of $1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c with a whole album of copper/bronze 1c, 1/2c... will post pics when i get the what looks like "dirt" off the copper/bronze coins..if i rub them with my finger, the dirt seems to come off. Looks like they were in an old pvc coin album for a long time...

Took them down to IS Wright in melbourne. The guy there said if i want to clean them up to use warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush. Or some acetone. The copper/bronze corns ares almost indistinguishable, like they are severly worn. He said it may just be that the coin is worn or they have a very poor strike, which may be common for these early asian coins... I will post up some pics when i get a chance..

The scanner seems to make it more yellow than it is... but it is silver..
strait settlement coins do have a slightly different "tone "to them, I have noticed it on my pre1900 coins.
as for grade its a details coin, at about fine as the head has weird wear patterns as a result of the way it was mounted would be my guess
still a great gap filler

Many of the coins I have removed from a fifty year old p.v.c. page today have suffered from some rather unattractive toning. One interesting thing noted was the lettering of the word 'Guernsey'. Not sure if the gap at the bottom of 'U' is intentional or an error.

I am attempting to put together a complete set of circulating Germany 10 Pfennig coins (will follow this with the other denominations later).
This involves collecting 4 different mints for all the years from 1950 to 1999 and 5 mints in the later years. Thanks to a friend in Germany, this task is nearly complete, with just a handful of coins required.

Nice the bee is generally more eastern in terms of ancients with more so known as a mint mark for Macedonian issues of the capital Pella and in terms of Phoenician coins of Aradus so it is interesting to see it on an Italian coin.

The two men's names are Medard Chouhort and Pierre-Esprit Radisson who were pioneers of the company.

I picked this 1937 Specimen set up overnight for 250 Quid :)
The sellers images are pretty rough but the entire set only cost me an extra few quid more than just the Maundy coins alone.
Mark kindly gave me a 1937 Maundy 3d and I had to get the other three coins to complete that set anyway and all the other coins in this set are a nice little bonus to add to my collections :yahoo:

A lot of these sets listed on eBay are described as Proofs yet on the case they are called "Specimen" sets.
The coppers in the set I am getting look pretty ordinary in the sellers images, I will just have to wait and see what they look like when I get them in hand.
I had a look at a few 1902 Short sets but the 4-5k price tag is pretty prohibitive :cray:

That totem pole is pretty cool!
The 1958 'Totem Pole' dollar reverse design shows a Totem Pole section (the top). The top figure on the totem is a Raven, used by some Indian tribes to symbolize death. It was rumored that those Indians disliked these dollars, causing them to be called "Death Dollars". Many, many snows ago (a little Indian lingo here), I was lucky to find some nice ones on the net.

I agree AJ. I can't be all that expensive if Thailand can produce 10 Baht bi-metallic coins, that's about 37c.
I opened up this 1970 Brit Proof set with great care.
Looks like the damage is already done, probably when they were packaged at the Royal Mint.
You would really have to look hard to find an Australian Proof set as banged up as these.
Anyway these don't cost a fortune unlike a 1970 Australian set and I quite like the designs.
I have always felt it is a pity that we never had a Half Crown coin like most of the rest of the Commonwealth did.

My camera seems to love finding every little flaw on a coin.
I suppose I could fiddle about with the settings and lighting then edit the crap out of them to make them look "Amazing" But I can't see the point in doing that.
My Camera is my second set of "Eyes" and the way I have it set up it is unbelievably useful when it comes to grading a coin :good:

Then Fiji coins - interestingly all their pennies I've seen before were silvery, but this one is yellowish which feels unusual.

The Fiji 1d & ½d's for 1942-43 were brass. Other 1d & ½d's s were Cupro-Nickel through to 1968

They are, Great Britain had three main periods of traders issuing tokens. The mid to late 1600's, the 1790's and 1810-1812. The ones from the 1790's (which these are from) have some amazing designs and are interesting to collect.

This is an interesting coin type I only learned about a few weeks ago. In 1918 and 1919 the new Italian government when striking 20 centesimos coins used coins of the same denomination from the 1890's in lieu of using newly manufactured blanks. This one is a 1918R 20c coin overstruck on an 1894KB 20c coin. The undertype on the obverse is very strong. Interestingly they are not really worth too much because (as far as I am aware) almost the entire 1918 and 1919 mintages were overstruck on earlier coins.

Acetone didn't do much for the coin unfortunately. Here is a pic of the other side. I can just make out some letters down the right hand side, after "ITALIA", but don't show up to well in the pic.

Four more of the Italian overstrikes arrived today. A 1919 with a lovely strong undertype, a 1918 in a surprisingly good grade and a bit of die clash and two more 1918's with nice evidence of the undertypes. Those last two will be going out to new homes next week!

Bought this 1908 maundy set recently. It's nicely toned and despite the dark colour on the obverse the coins still show full underlying lustre. My favourite part though is the box, a contemporary satin lined leatherette thing that is charmingly inscribed on the inside lid.

My pics are no where near the quality of Mark's pics, but I just use a $80 Fuji Finepix J40 set to fully automatic and on the macro setting.

Has anyone ever come across a 1965 New Zealand pre-decimal set in a case like this before? I was wondering if anyone knows if this is a ballot set or someone has just taken the coins out of a plastic blue card set and placed them in this case.

So check out the NZ coin catalogue (I have 2013) and 1965 polished proofs have a "ballot" issue of 500 sets and 1967 500 sets of "ballot" issue. My guess is that's what we see in those 2 links.
Yes the box is very similar to the one you put a link to except it only has New Zealand printed on top rather than 1967 New Zealand Decimal Set and the velvet lining is more of a dark blue/purple colour rather than black. I thought the 500 1965 polished proof ballot set came in a red box although I am far from 100% sure. The seller was in the UK however I have no idea if it was an export set or not. The threepence also has what looks to be a planchet error. There is a chunk of missing metal on the left handside of the coin in the fields.

Gee Dean that's a hard one as they could say it's impaired or it would probably grade low PR due to some of the marks on the obverse on here cheek and the rusty looking marks on both side but just see what other have to say :winkextra:

PR66 (maybe 65 if the graders are miserable). I think you'd be hard done by to not get the DC designation. Proofs less than that are usually pretty ugly and that coin isn't ugly. There's a couple of light handling marks on the portrait as you noted and a bit of grime but the mirrors and frosting looks beautiful. Compare that florin with the ugly PVC affected proof crown below that was a PR64.

Thanks mate, and yes Dean's coin is far better than that one and the field are far superior :good: It's so hard to try and work PCGS and their grading out but yes that coin isn't that attractive but if it was aussie it might not make PR62.
Some of my aussie silver proofs only made PR65 and look like they should have got a better grade and same with some of my coppers but them's the breaks.
I've actually been thinking about resubmitting some of my MS silvers as they'd probably grade higher now as they're in old slabs and PCGS doesn't seem to be as hard as what they were a few years ago..still thinking on that one though.
Just added this coin and a few more of his mates,
to complete my KM#108 (10 Pfennig) set, that's all the mints,
from 1950 to 1996. Now to work on the 5Pf. :)

Today I received the final coin that I needed to complete the 1950 to 1996 5 pfennig KM#107 set. This is the low mintage (1.7m) 1967G.
I have now completed the 10pf and 5pf sets and a large chunk of the 2pf as well.

I'm just using a point and shoot camera on full auto,
but I was taking some pictures of these pfennig coins
the other week and the facial recognition and flash came
on and it took a fantastic pic. Much more depth than normal.
so I played around with the flash, covering it up with thicker
and thicker layers of paper until they came out just nice and
without too much glare.

It's sitting on top of a cut down milk bottle with some extra
translucent packing material over top, to help cut down the
flash too.
The two 2pf's that I need are 1995G and 1996G.
Ralf accidentally sent me 2 lots of Fs instead of

That 1964 proof New Zealand Florin graded PR63CA as did the 1964 proof New Zealand Sixpence I got from the same seller. Probably the handling marks that kept the grade down on the florin as Ausjack mentioned.

I love the Irish farthings (there's something eirie about them) .... must find mine one day .... I can see what you mean in the denticles, kinda stands out eh. Some of the other guys who are fluent with PCGS's grading will hopefully advise if it will come back with an environmental damage details designation or not. Try some WD40 perhaps? I'm not sure, so I'll leave it for the experts.

My fav coin in my modest collection is this shilling I found while gold prospecting in the Bathurst region. Can't believe it has been sitting in the ground for over 150 years, looks like it was dropped with very little circulation. Would have been a lot of money to lose for a gold prospector in those days.

Thanks for that Heath, that shilling is a bloody beauty and especially for one that's been buried. They say to get rid of verdigris (the green death) soak in olive oil but it has to be in it for months and as I have no patience I use a WD/CRC type spray and that seems to work ok, oh and not only use a tooth pick on the hard stuff use a cotton tip and like roll it over trying not to rub and then rinse off with hot soapy water and again try not to wipe and just pat dry. A lot say not to clean coins but as I don't sell it's only to preserve the coin as it doesn't take long and the green death will completely destroy a coin.
Damn it, one day I might be able to work out how to post pic's and not have to use tiny pics.

That is great advice the Ausjack, much appreciated. I don't sell my coins either and want to preserve them as well.
When detecting we get a lot of totally ruined pennies and half pennies, a mate detected a 1923 half penny a few weeks back and it's a bit toasted but still clearly a 1923, quite an amazing find.
Yes that would be a good fine. Any coins you can't recognise you can always scrap as copper and silver is still worth. There's one member that has melted down silver into little bars.

This is the second 2018-dated coin* which I found in circulation. Actually, it's one of four. When I was paying at a local supermarket I noticed that there were brand new €2 coins in the €2 compartment of the till. I asked the cashier if she could give me my return money in coins only. Fortunately, there wasn't much going on at this check-out line AND the lady was very nice. So she gave me my return money in coins and I got this coin.
*: my first coin was ''Helmut Schmidt'' mint-mark ''A'' three days earlier.

On April 19th, 2018 the second polymer-ringed coin of the (NCLT) €5 series ''Climate Zone of the World'' (orange coloured) was released by the Bundesbank. Got mine at a local bank on April 20th. The bank had mintmark ''J'' only. If you hold the coin against a light source the polymer-ring will start to ''glow.''
Mint-marks ''A'' and ''D'' (each mintmark has a different shade of orange) were also released across Germany. It seems that mintmarks ''G'' and ''F'' have been mostly distributed to coin dealers(hips) -- as was the case in 2017. :@

I collect ''modern'' danish coins; but types only.
Since 2017, Danish coins are minted at the Finnish mint because the mint in Copenhagen was closed.
Interestingly, the mint-marks on the 2017-dated 10 kr and 20 kr coins are now gone again. So, both denominations are now back to their type from 2013. (10 kr 2014-2016 mint-mark ''JS''; 20 kr 2014-2015 ''JS'', 2016 ''LGS'').
Anyway, as the 2017-dated coins were minted in Finland I decided to get me a set, including the 2017 20 kr commemorative, as a birthday present to myself.

Yes, they are.
The most patience I had was with a set of the 2002 Euro ''circulation'' coins from San Marino: 8 years.
I waited so long until I got them for a reasonable price.
Yeah when it's not a mainstream item it can really be a hassle to track down.
So it looks like the crossed hammers are the mintmark and the other symbol is mint-master Jan Erik Johansen's mark.

I just use a Fujifilm J40 set on full auto, and macro.
I leave the flash on for better depth to the pic, but
tape some paper over the flash to tone it down a bit.

Between 2002 and 2013, Denmark had a fairly extensive circulation commemorative coin program. They called it ''Thematic Coins.''
There were three 20 kr series: Towers (2002-2007), Ships (2007-2012) and Scientists (2013) and two 10 kr series Fairy Tales (2005-2007) and Polar Year (2007-2009). I have my eyes on them for quite some time. However, they are quite expensive for cc coins. But I finally decided to get me the 10 kr coins.

They were released into circulation beginning at the end of January 2019. It took a long time before I got my first one from circulation. Yesterday in change at a supermarket. Almost five months. I have usually found the coins of this series (€2 German state series) within the first four weeks of issue (one per year has been issued since 2006).

These two arrived a few days ago.
Notice the mint-mark ''A'' on the left one at the ''7 o'clock'' position. The Brazilian central bank has given the letter ''A'' to the Royal Dutch mint. It's the first time in many years that Brazilian coins were minted outside of the country. The Royal Dutch mint also minted 5 Centavo coins dated 2019. They have the mint-mark ''A'' too.

No, they are None Circulation Legal Tender coins.
They are sold in ''standard circulation finish'' (better just call it ''unc'') via offices of the Bundesbank and certain local banks for face value.
You can buy them in proof-like finish from the Federal Governments Mint office. Of course, there is a surcharge and VAT has to be paid, too. This year, a €5 costs €15,59. The €10 costs €24,86.
The ,59 and ,86 is because the German VAT has temporarily been lowerd from 19% to 16% because ot the virus pandemic.
I have a small collection of contemporay circulation coins from Norway. I have been chasing this particular Norwegian coin for almost 11 years. It escaped me twice. Once early in the hunt, the second time in the middle. But I was finally lucky lately.
Mintage is just over a million. Not really rare for Norway's mintage figures in modern time, yet it's certainly on the low side.

This is the first coin of a new five year series of polymer-ringed €10 NCLT coins from Germany. The theme is (loosely translated) ''taking care of society. This year, it's nursing services. Next year, it's fire brigades.
This time, all five German mints use the same colour of the polymer-ring. The only difference is the mint-mark. My local bank got the coins from the mint in Berlin (''A''). I am not a fan of this new series. But I got some for trading buddies.
Not a bad looking coin but I won't be tempted into collecting any new coins apart from Australia. My German collection consists mainly of 5 Reichsmarks from 1933 to 1939. Plenty of different mint marks and 80% silver. The eagle is a plus too.

A few days ago, the first of nine new €5 NCLT coins was issued here in Germany. The theme of the series is ''the wonderful world of insects.'' It will be issued from 2022 (one coin) till 2024 (four coins 2023 and 2024 each). The coins are cupro-nickel. They look great on paper. See attached PR poster from the German mint service. However, in realitiy not so much. See attached picture taken under difficult light conditions.
I got two coins for face value from my local bank. I must say I am a little bit disappointed.

22 years after having been released into circulation I finally got this one in change at my local bakery (which is in the next village) two days ago. It's really incredible that I got one in change. 899.800 were officially released for ''circulation'' in 2002. However, certain coin dealers with very good connections were able to get their hands on rolls back then. So, the number of coins released into the wild must have been lower.
It's only the third coin from one of the three (now four) small non-EU but Eurozone member countries that I found in change (no noodling or roll checking). The other two were 50c coins from San Marino.

My latest thing is collecting these old Indian Raj Rupees, such beautiful coins and minted in high numbers (High 8 figures each year and 9 figures in some years), means you can pick up EF to UNC coins for a song and VF grade ones grow on trees.
Besides being a beautiful and decent size silver coin (Okay its not a Morgan Dollar, Maria Teresa or Crown) but its a decent size coin - they have all these varieties with reverses and mintmark varieties. Plus the Tibetans imitated them and the Chinese also used them a lot. What is not to like?

These beauties are over 100 years old and gleam on. The 1840 coin may be the most common coin issued in 1840 out of silver, 500 million when you include all varieties. That's US penny levels there!

Thanks - bought some more 1862 Rupees with dot varieties. They are high grade, but cleaned. Fortunately the cleaning was a long while ago and the tone is starting to return.

I was at the lower end, until my partner passed away early last year. Since then I think its grown out of control. Yet compared to some of the moneybags types on Youtube and the Bowers and Merina crowd who buy Eliasbery specimen 1804 dollars and King Farouk collection 1933 double eagles, I would be only in the lower middle end of that spectrum. Just an average guy who got lucky by having Mr Moneybags as a partner.

However the party will end as I need the money for a house (I am still over quarter of a million from oblivion).
In 2019 I started collecting again seriously, back then I had around 2000 coins and most were base metals and in average or poor condition. i had maybe 20 silver coins in total. There was almost no specialisation. I had 20 banknotes, most $1 and $2 NZ and cheap Slavic and Hispanic junk. Total value maybe $200 or $300. Oldest coin was a holed 1758 6d of the UK
By mid 2024, I had 14k coins and over 3k were silver weighing 15kg, most were numismatic, but some were stacking coins (Around 2 - 3kg or stacking silver). I have 8 or 9 countries seriously collecting. I also now have around 15 ounces of gold coinage and again some of it is collector quality. I also have 300 banknotes including very serious collections of NZ, Fiji and several other Pacific Islands. Total value now around $150,000 with $70,000 in gold and $20,000 in Silver (As bulk not including numismatic value). Oldest coin is 400BC, but many coins from the 13th to 17th centuries.
My neighbour knows that I collect coins. Therefore, he sometimes checks what he receives in change. Recently, he found the follwoing coin in his change. I got the coin for face value.

This is a one off NZ coin from 1994. i bought to join another coin I was getting for Trigg

This is a bimetallic old style 50 cents of NZ. They were issued to celebrate 225 years of Captain Cook coming to NZ. Yes my Aussie friends he came to NZ before Australia in October 1769, hence 1994.
They made it bimetallic and it was our first bimetallic coin, the same size as a usual old 50c (31.5mm 13.50 grams). There were 3 types, muck metal (Aluminium bronze centre, cupro nickel ring), silver (This one which is same centre but sterling silver ring of 6 grams) and the gold one which was 22 carat gold centre and 9 carat white gold ring (Remnant silver).
Its a nice coin and worth the $60 I paid for it, just 4,600 silver ones minted for the proof set and 55,000 muck metals for the UNC sets and alone, the gold was a few hundred. I have the muck metal one (And so does Trigg). now to get the gold one!
Yeah the bimetallic commemoratives had a bit of a time in the 1990s but not much after that.

Here is a set that I recently purchased.
The new coinage of the caribbean island of Saint Maarten. Saint Maarten has a monetary union with Curacao. Both islands are part (''countries'') of the the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
To be honest, I paid too much for it. It was my own fault. I got a bad case of FOMO and bought a set. I didn't realized after buying and paying that the 5 Guilder coin was not part of the set. :blackeye: Hence, I had to buy it separately. The total price for the coins was in the top region what dealers are charging here in Europe. What made the complete set really expensive -- too expensive -- was however the postage as there were two shipments with registered mail. Postage was the real killer. :@
So, after all these years of collection and buying coins I made a beginner's mistake. Yet, I like the set and I am happy to have it in my collection. But I will be very careful when I try to get the Curacao version of these coins. It's like the Euro. Each country -- Curacao; Saint Maarten -- has it's own version and both versions are legal tender in both countires. By the way, the coins were minted in Canada by the Royal Canadian Mint. The coins cannot deny that they have ''relatives'' in Canada. The are similarites a rather obvious, especially if you have the coins in your ''hands.''

The Sint Marten coins are interesting, I would find the 5 and 1 Guilden very confusing though. This over reliance on muck metal these days.
Trigg, its hard to show 5 mark coins, when the maximum size of photo is 200kb, and I for one like to save all my crown size coins at 500 x 500 pixels in a Jpg or Jpeg and it can go over 200kb, hence why I only really show small coins at times.
Plus modern computers have this new picture format, which makes it hard to compress and cut kb as well.

Thanks to recently received funds (Thanks trigg) I was able to acquire this coin which had been on my wish list for quite a while.
As I got it from outside the European Union I had to pay a custom fee of €2,02. Annoying, but unavoidable and expected. What really, really annoyed me however was the amount of the ''custom service fee'' DHL charged me: €7,50!!! Again, I had expected the fee. Yet, €7,50 is plain robbery.
Still, I am very happy to have added the coin to my collection.

That must have set you back a fair whack Tane. I balk at buying one ounce gold coins these days.
Last ounce of gold I got was $1750 Australian per ounce. That is a while back.
It did cost me a lot, but already gained another $100 since when I bought it on Monday. I paid approx 13% over the melt value and records show only 5,612 of them were minted, well below the usual for a 1 ounce generic Britannia coin.
It cost $7,820 NZD or about $7,100 your money, now I understand about prices going up. I bought a one ounce gold Maple leaf for less than half that on April 30 2024 ($3,850) and that coin has doubled its value. My major gold buy was 24 sovereigns for a total cost of $20,830 back in December 2023 (Inclusive of 15% GST levied on non pure gold coins), now the melt on those regardless of the GST is $36,500.
I have been telling friends to buy gold for years. Now I don't recommend it because it is too high. In various bars and coins I have a bit over a kilo. I know I should have more as a percentage of my total portfolio but I just can't justify it.
Its not for everyone and I know how expensive it is. Most people could not afford even a half sovereign or a teensy coin like a 1/10 or 1/25 ounce and fair enough. Silver is still affordable, but barely.
Plus despite all the growth, its still a risk, alot of people have been buying it because of FOMO (Fear of Missing out), but then again it could go up to $5kUSD and then drop to $1,500 and stay there 10 years. Especially the mixture of FOMO, post Covid Pressures, hot heads fighting wars, Chinese, Russia and North Korea being anti social and the idiot in the White House are all kind of rarking up metal prices. Remove all these factors and the price may sail back down.
And what chance of that?
A snowball's chance in hell?

You have the left and right in most countries getting more visceral, religious divisions and schisms widening especially Islam versus Judaism and Islam vs everyone else, Fundamentalist Christianity vs all other Christianity and atheism, all religion vs LGBTI. Even a lot of us gay men are sick of blue haired trans gender activists speaking for us etc.
The only upside is anyone with precious metal can do well, as paper currencies with no metal backing keep losing value.

I got some Euros from a neighbour who just came back, basically so we'd have some change for March when we head over. Got three euros, one two euro and one one euro, plus 80 euro cents.
Also got 4 Swiss francs and 30 cents? coinage?
The one euro is from Spain 2006 and the two euro is 2015, a big stylized eagle, so I'm guessing from Germany. Neither in good condition.
I'll be using euros in Finland and Estonia in March next year. Any I should be watching out for apart from the ones from Monaco?

Finland is a low cash country like Sweden and Norway. You should find some Euro coins though. But it probably won't be easy because the Fins like paying cashless.
You should have more success in Estonia.
Andorra and Vatican coins. They are rare but they are regularly found in circulation.
If you find a Grace Kelly in circulation it's 100% a chinease fake.

Those Namibia (Nambia to Dump) coins are nice. The $5 is a nice design.
I somehow got a set of their old notes a couple of years ago- $10 up to $200, yet their dollar is the same as a rand. Seems that many southern African currencies are in the same value basket as the South African Rand - Botswana Pula, Namibia dollar, Lesotho Maloti, Eswatini Emalangeni (My grasp of afro currency names is not perfect, but may have those 2 mixed up).
So they around 8 - 9 cents NZD or the $200 is worth $17 or so, so the $5 coin is only around 42 cents.
I reached out to friends in Namibia and South Africa to check on current use of South African rand and about Botswana.
The current Common Monetary Area countries are: South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, and Eswatini.
Weird that for Eswatini, the money is still called the Swazi Lilangeni. You used the plural words.
Botswana did not join and the South African rand stopped being legal tender in 1976.
While not pegged, Zimbabwe accepts rand and other currencies such as the US Dollar, British Pound, and Botswana Pula in addition to their currency.
What I experienced in Namibia is that if you spend South African rand, that often your change would be in Namibian banknotes and coins.
Krugerrands for the win. I think I have all of three of them.

A 1745 Lima Halfcrown of the UK, in gVF condition. This goes well with my 1746 Lima coin which I bought in early 2020 and was in VG condition, back then it cost just $85. This one cost me $500.

For those of you who don't know, Lima marked coins were when the British seized a French ship in 1744 that had several hundred kg of Spanish silver and gold aboard (France and Spain were allies then due to shared Bourbon Monarchs - Felipe V of Spain was actually Prince Philippe, the grandson of Louis XIV of France). Anyway the Brits found out this silver came from Lima (Actually Potosi mountain in Bolivia) and was Spanish Plate silver (Some was given to the froggies too).
The British melted it all and minted Gold guineas and Silver Crowns, Halfcrowns, Shillings, Sixpences from it and marked them with "LIMA" under the bust of King George II. There was several million coins made and compared to most George II coins, Lima marked ones are more common and easy to find even now. They were dated 1745 and 1746 and overdates exist as well.
It was the last hurrah for huge silver issues as most denominations of silver above 4d fell off in the 1750s and apart from one issue of shillings in 1763 (Northumberland), 1787 (Shillings and Sixpences) and 1797 - 1815 (Overstruck spanish coins, silver and bank tokens). There would be no more huge issues of silver coins until 1816.

I mainly mentioned it, as so many collectors honestly think that the British navy actually attacked Lima to get the silver and gold. The British had been there though a few years earlier with the battle of Jenkin's ear (The one which led to the rum ration being reduced and watered down).
The other big treasure grab was in 1702 at Vigo Bay in North Spain in which the British and Portuguese captured some Spanish ships and took their bullion, some silver and gold of Queen Anne has "VIGO" on it and I don't have a Vigo coin yet but want one. So weird as I have a 1702 shilling, but its just an ordinary no Vigo one made out of British silver.

This is a 1645 Hammered crown of Charles I!

It was minted at Exeter (Devon) as a Royalist was privately minting coins for the crown, he was shut down a few months later. So this coin is huge and hack silver basically, scarce type as its dated and has a turret/castle mintmark. My first ever pre milled British crown, it is rough and worn (Still fine) but what a coin.
For you Aussies, its ex a Downies sale with an 80s style Downies card with it.

You guys are going to love this crown, it was the one that got away when I bought the 1645 crown. The buyer is a friend of mine and he needed the money so sold this coin to me (With a little mark up of course, born coin dealer).

This is a 1551 Silver Crown of England, Edward VI. This is a dream coin I have dreamed owning for years, it is a cassic coin, first ever silver crown and huge silver coin of England in the 16th century big coin craze after silver was found in a Czech mountain (Joachimsthal) and mountains of silver and gold coming out of the Americas through Spain and Portugal.
The coin weighs almost 31 grams and is 42mm in size. The fact the crown (5/-, 60 pence) denomination was usually a gold coin back then, speaks volumes of how much silver there is. It is also the first English coin (The UK did not exist until 1801 and Great Britain until 1707) that had a date on it in Arabic numerals. We got some Roman ones in 1548, but no dates at all except mintmarks before that. The coin has the Y mintmark indicating it was minted by Sir Thomas York.
The coin is turning 475 years old this year.
And this is a hammered coin, so must have been a chore to mint.
As soon as I looked at it I said, wow that is hand struck, huge detail for one like that. Of course I love it.

Wow, that is a massive chunk of silver. Glad you were able to acquire it Tane.
Just details cleaned, they usually give you a grade like VF details cleaned. I think it was cleaned a long time ago as some blue toning has come back and toning generally takes a few decades to form.
I am not so sure about it being VF though, probably a good Fine as Eddie's head is quite flat and some of the stunners out there, you can see all details.
$1,000 Kiwi though - not even close. I paid $3,900 for it. Catalogue price in Fine in the UK is £1250 and V Fine is £4,000. Actual values are much higher, you never see them outside auctions. The guy who sold it to me turned down an offer of £2,400 from the UK as he wanted the coin to stay in the country and also a local dealer for the same amount, as he knew I would love it.
Its annoying its cleaned though, nearly every old coin is cleaned here, I have never cleaned anything unless its grubby or common and I was "testing" mainly hot water and detergent washes.
It's lovely but I couldn't justify paying that much for one coin.
I did spend $2000 on a ghost $10 note and $2800.01 on a consecutive pair of Coombs and Wilson Star $10 notes that graded as MS64 if I recall correctly.
That was my biggest spend. Not at the same time.
I couldn't really either unless it was a super special coin.
I have always been interested in British and before that English coins and first got into history around age 8 and read about Kings and Queens of England and have been obsessed with the Tudors since then and when I seriously got into coins, read books about the history of English coins and noticed the importance of that fine silver series of Edward VI from 1551 -3 and the fact those coins were the first silver Crowns, Halfcrowns and Sixpences, so owning one is a piece of history.
I actually got a beat up shilling of the series back in 2021, but I had never seen the crowns until that one came along 2 months ago and a friend bought it before I did. Fortunately he is terrible with money and needed to sell it, so I became the natural choice and here we are.
If its something I am really into, and I have the money and know it could be a good investment like that coin, I would buy it. Its the most I have paid for a coin outside gold (Bought whole gold ounces for like $7,800 etc (Remember our dollar is worth 82 of your cents)) and usually my limit for any coin is around $500 - $1,000.
But already again a friend has just got me a 1828 Half Crown in VF and I am paying him $1,000 for it (Actually he is getting a gold sovereign and he is sending me $800 more of stuff I have chosen). Yes my coin collecting is probably getting out of hand, but its better than spending it on wine, women and song. Plus I am getting an income now at least too.
I am usually sensible, but opportunity seldom knocks twice, had I NOT bought that crown, its likely I would never have had another chance to.
Fair enough, it is a great coin and it brings you happiness. That is most important.
My last gold purchase was an ounce roo but in those days it was $1750 Australian for an ounce. Wish I had bought more.
I keep hoping for gold to go back down to $3000 an ounce. I think I'll be waiting a long time.
