This indicates that this same reverse die was originally matched with the wrongly fitted Quarter Anna Indian obverse die that was responsible for the creation the 1916 Halfpenny Mule. An unknown small number of coins were minted with this combination of dies, but the reverse die was left in place after the offending obverse die was changed. It is thought that a mintage of about 30,000 coins ensued using this particular reverse die.
